Heavy duty wrecker tow truck. Chicago Illinois USA. January 2011.

Heavy commercial trucks + fast food restaurants around 11:00 AM on any given weekday =North Harlem Avenue just south of the intersection at West Irving Park Road on the northwest side of Chicago Illinois.

This popular strip of North Harlem Avenue with a small number of good fast food restaurants along the east side of Harlem, often finds many heavy trucks from the City of Chicago Department of Streets and sanitation, the Illinois Department of Transportation, several public works vechicles from surrounding suburban communities, as well as local delivery trucks ranging from UPS, to auto parts stores.

Mister Beef and KFC, are popular with local truck drivers working in this area anytime.

Thanks.

The Union Pacific Railroad M-19A Diesel Shop. Chicago Illinois. April 2010.

I took this photo back in early April of 2010.

Looking north from adjacent West Kinzie Street just east of North Kilbourn Avenue on the west side of the city of Chicago Illinois, We see several Union Pacific freight diesel locomotives idling on the ready tracks, at the Union Pacific M-19A Diesel Shop facility.

Southbound Canadian Pacific grain train. Jan 2010.

I photographed this digital live sound video during My morning lunch break one day, back in January of 2010.

We are standing along the east side of Illinois U.S Route # 43 Waukegan Road in far north suburban Bannockburn Illinois, just south of the intersection at Illinois U.S Route # 22 Half day Road.

After waiting outside in the cold at this location for what seemed like a lenghty period of time, a southbound Canadian Pacific Railroad unit grain train, is viewed passing by on the Canadian Pacific ex Milwaukee Road mainline.

Up front are locomotives acquired through merger, from the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad.

The old steam era manual semaphore signals that used to operate atBrighton Junction. Chicago Illinois. September 2006.

I took this photo during an early September 2006 visit to Brighton Junction. located on an elevated embankment near the intersection of South Archer and Western Avenues where Chicago's Brighton Park and adjoining Mc Kinley Park neighborhoods met, for many years this junction was a technological hold out from the steam era.

This photo was taken during it's last full year of operation, for the old steam era manual semaphore signals that guarded the crosstracks of the Canadian National's former Illinois Central / pre 1972 Gulf, Mobile & Ohio mainline, and the Conrai's former Penn Central / pre 1968 Pennsylvania Railroad "Panhandle" line.

On the weekend of July 3rd, 2007, the Canadian National Railroad converted this junction to automatic block signal operation with tall overhead girder signal bridges, and new crosstracks.

I spotted this rare historic 1947 Chicago photo from the Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe
Railroad at My link page Yesteryear Depot. Com to the right of Your computer screen.

I Myself, have been a life long fan of the former Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. I grew up as a Young boy on the near southwest side of Chicago during the 1960's and 70's, with the Santa Fe and their pre 1972 Chicago subsidiary railroad Illinois Northern serving the factory spurs in My old neighborhood. The Santa Fe mainline and Corwith Yard, was approximately a mile south of where I lived.

This photo dated for July 30th, 1947, shows a hard working A,T & S,F 0-8-0 steam locomotive # 582 at work in what as described as the "Chicago Yards". I believe this location is actually the Santa Fe Corwith Yard located in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood. It was nice being able to see how the steam era Santa Fe looked like in My home town many decades ago, just prior to eventual dieselization.

The Mount Prospect, Metra commuter rail station. Mount Prospect Illinois USA. Wednsday, January 26th, 2011.

I took this photo during My morning lunch break recently, in northwest suburban Mount Prospect Illinois.

Looking south from the northside of adjacent Illinois U.S Route # 14 / Northwest Highway, is the Metra commuter rail station serving the village of Mount Prospect Illinois.

The station originally served passenger trains from the former Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in years past. Today, it serves Metra commuter trains on the Metra / union Pacific Railroad northwest line to Harvard Illinois.

1970's era former Illinois Central Gulf Hi Cube box car in transit. La Grange Park Illinois. January 2007.

I took this photo during a dry but cold Winter day, back in January of 2007.

A southbound freight train was occupying the Harding Avenue railroad crossing in west suburban La Grange Park Illinois at the time of My visit.

Tucked in to the consist of the freight train to the right of the photograph, is an unrepainted 1970's era Illinois Central Gulf Railroad 86 foot Hi Cube boxcar.

Part of the fun of lineside railfan photography, are finding those remnants of railroads past, that are stil rolling around in their original colors and markings many years after the fact.

The Canadian National Railroad bought out the Illinois Central through merger in the year of 1999.

Illinois Terminal RR # 415 at Barn # 8 stop.

I photographed this digital live sound video, during My Friday, July 3rd, 2009 visit to The Illinois Railway Museum in the town of Union Illinois.

An excelent way to get around the museum's large property, is aboard the shuttle trolley loop line that was erected during the 1980's.

Seen here is preserved Illinois Terminal Railroad lightweight interurban trolley car # 415, approaching the Barn # 8 stop on the museum's shuttle trolley loop line. In the background, We hear the airhorn of the museum's preserved and operating Commonwealth Edison Company EMD SW 1 switcher, switching cars in a nearby storage yard.

I spotted this this photo at My link page Yesteryear Depot. com to the right
of Your computer screen.

A large railroad that had a major presence on the southside of Chicago Illinois
many years ago, was the now long since defunct Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific.

Financially challenged and suffering from several bankruptcies, the Rock Island
Line shut down for good on March 31st, 1980. The equipment sold or leased to
other railroads, and the various mainline routes either abandoned or leased to
upstart new shortline and regional railroads. The old Rock Island is still lamented
by some of My fellow Chicago railfans today.

The Rock Island was known for many years, for just about owning at least "One" of every North American diesel locomotive manufacturers engines on their property.
The Rock Island operated several EMD 1950's era passenger E unit series locomotives in Chicago to Joliet Illinois commuter train service, the Rock Island's own passenger trains to Peopria and the Quad citties that lasted until 1978, and
would even utilize these locomotives on freight trains as well.

This photo was taken at Blue Island Illinois in 1975.

Southbound Canadian National transfer train crosses over a siding lead track. Hawthorne Junction. Chicago / Cicero Illinois. October 2008.

I took this photo one lovely Autum evening, back in October of 2008.

We are on location at Hawthorne Junction, at the Chicago city limits
adjacent to west suburban Cicero Illinois. A southbound Canadian National transfer freight train, is viewed departing from the former Illinois Central Railroad's Crawford Yard at Cicero Illinois.

The slow moving freight train, is entering the Belt Railway of Chicago interchange connection at Hawthorne Junction. The train is now preparing to cross over a single crosstracked spur siding lead on the former Illinois Central subsidiary switching railroad, Chicago & Illinois Western.

Northbound Metra express. Edgebrook station. January 2011.

I photographed this digital live sound video recently after work, on the night of January 19th, 2011 on location at the Metra Edgebrook commuter flagstop depot in Chicago Illinois.
This depot is located near the interof West Devon and North Lehigh Avenues, in Chicago's Edgebrook neighborhood. This neighborhood community, is located on the far northwest side of Chicago, near the Chicago city limits border south of Niles Illinois.

Seen here is a northbound fast moving Metra evening rush hour express double headed commuter train, enroute to Fox Lake Illinois over the Canadian Pacific owned former Milwaukee Road mainline. This view was taken from the adjacent parking lot north of the station.

Sunset in Glenview Illinois. February 2010.

Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.

I took this beautiful Wintertime sunset photo after work one evening, back in February of 2009.

We are facing west at the Chestnut Avenue railroad crossing in north suburban Glenview Illinois. Another Winter day is coming to an end, wearing brilliant colors in the sky, as night will soon be approaching.

As much as I hate winter, the winter sunsets are absolutely the most beautiful and spectacular to Me. They are a true work of art.

Thanks.

Digital Live Sound Video: Early morning snow plowing operations in north suburban Glenview Illinois, January 2010.

I photographed this digital live sound video around 5:30 AM back
in January of 2010, on location in north suburban Glenview Illinois.

A dump truck driver from the Glenview Department of Public Works, is seen plowing snow on Railroad Avenue. A heavy all night lake effect snowstorm left many parts of the greater Chicagoland area digging out that morning.

Wintertime at the Fox River Trolley Museum. South Elgin Illinois. December 2007.

Don't let that ice on the third rail shoe fool You.

No, this photo wasn't taken at the Chicago Transit Authority's Howard Street Yard at north suburban Evanston Illinois, but rather The Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin Illinois during the off season.

The Fox River Trolley Museum, is home to a small number of retired former Chicago Transit Authority rapid transit subway cars.

Southbound Amtrak Hiawatha train enroute to Chicago Illinois. The Glen of North Glenview Metra commuter rail station. Glenview Illinois. Febuary 2008.

I took this photo during a very cold and overcast Winter morning, back in February of 2008.

The fast moving southbound Amtrak Hiawatha train enroute to Chicago Union Station from Milwaukee Wisconsin, is viewed whipping through the Glen of North Glenview Metra commuter rail station, at north suburban Glenview Illinois.

The Amtrak General Electric P 42 Genesis series locomotive, is pushing the train to Chicago.

Eastbound Union Pacific extra. Mount Prospect Illinois.

I photographed this very unique digital live sound video on location, at the Metra commuter rail station in northwest suburban Mount Prospect Illinois during My morning lunch break.

The Metra / Union Pacific northwest line to Harvard Illinois, is a former Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad mainline that sees more than two thirds of it's daily rail traffic, in the form of Chicago's Metra commuter rail trains.

Although there actually is a marginal degree of on line freight traffic on this route, freight trains are actually a somewhat rare sight on this particular Chicago area railroad line. Most everytime I am around this route, all I usually see, are Metra commuter trains.

Seen here slowly approaching and passing through the Mount Prospect Illinois Metra commuter rail station, is a very short Union Pacific Railroad switching local being pulled by two EMD model GP 15 light roadswitchers. This freight train is running as an extra during off peak commuting hours. Notice the former pre 1995 Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad bay window caboose bringing up the rear of the train.

The Mount Prospect, Metra commuter rail station. Mount Prospect Illinois USA. Wednsday, January 24th, 2011.

I took this photo yesterday morning during My lunch break, in northwest suburban Mount Prospect Illinois.

Seen here, is the former Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad passenger train station, located on Northwest Highway / Illinos U.S Route # 14 and Elmhurst Road / Illinois U.S Route # 83, in northwest suburban Mount Prospect Illinois.

This depot serves Metra commuter trains, on the Metra / Union Pacific "Northwest" line to Harvard Illinois.

Eastbound Belt Railway of Chicago transfer train leaving Clearing Yard.Photographed at Hayford Junction. Chicago Illinois. January 1987.

One of My personal favorites amongst the many lineside railfan photographs I had taken over the years, is this one from January of 1987.

After a heavy all morning lake effect snowstorm had stopped falling on Chicago one early Saturday afternoon back in January of 1987, I ventured out with a camera in hand to Hayford Junction, to capture some working images of "Chicago Winter Railroading" on location.

Seen here just west of the crosstracks at Chicago's Hayford Junction on the southwest side of the city, is an eastbound Belt Railway of Chicago transfer freight train departing the nearby BRC Clearing Yard facility.

Silent digital video: Metra two train meet at the Harlem Avenue station. Berwyn Illinois. January 2008.

I photographed this silent digital video with My old digital camera, back in early January of 2008.

A new year had just begun a few days ago, and the greater Chicagoland area was experiencing dry conditions and somewhat cold but yet mild outdoor temperatures.

The dry conditions and tollerable temperatures would not last long. The following week, snowstorms and bitterly cold temperatures would arrive.

Seen here in the begining of January in 2008, is a two train Metra morning rush hour meet at the Harlem Avenue station, in west suburban Berwyn Illinois. The train on the left is an inbound local, that is boarding and disembarking passengers. The train on the right, is a fast moving morning rush hour express comuter train, that is hustling past our camera location at speed.

First Transit bus # 5157 morning pre trip inspection ritual. Glenview Illinois USA. Monday, January 24th, 2011.

Hello everyone!

Welcome aboard the "Bus Day" edition of Eddie's Railfan Page.

I took this photo at work this past Monday morning, at My company's
paratransit bus garage facility in north suburban Glenview Illinois.

It is 6:00 AM, and My workday as a Paratransit bus driver is about
to begin shortly. I took this photo, while I was performing the mandatory pre trip vechicle inspection of My assigned bus.

Everything was in working order, and soon I would be enroute
to Elk Grove Village Illinois near Chicago's O'Hare International
Airport. It was a very busy day, with many rides telephoned in.

Railroads from North America's Pacific Northwest region of the Nation
have always fascinated Me through the years.

I spotted this photo at My link page Fallen Flags.Org to the right of Your
computer screen this morning.

One of the railroads that made up the huge mega merger Burlington Northern
Railroad on March 2nd, 1970, was the fallen flag Spokane, Portland & Seatle
Railroad. This photo is listed as being taken on July 15th, 1972, on location
at Pulman Junction on the far southside of Chicago Illinois.

This car is a 50 foot double door steam era box car, that still retained it's roofwalks by the time of this 1972 photo. Roofwalks were eventualy outlawed
during the 1960's, as they were very dangerous.

Niles Public Services utility box truck, Niles Illinois USA. Tuesday, December 21st, 2010.

I took this photo during My lunch break one day last month.

Seen here at a worksite on North Harlem Avenue, just north of the intersection of West Touhy Avenue....is a GMC light utility box van
truck from the Niles Public Services Company.

The crew appeared to be at the site of a water main repair on
North Harlem Avenue. These trucks wich utilize the cab from a
standard cargo van and the box body of a delivery truck, are a
practical and cost effective sollution to maintaining city infrastructure.

Eddie K and his friend Pepper. Chicago Illinois USA. May 1983.

Hi everyone!
Welcome abaoard Edie's Railfan Page from the city of Chicago Illinois.

Although this is generally a Railfan / Transportation Enthusiasts blogsite...."Human Interest" photographs are a special part of it all as well. ( I love dogs.)

Just recently, this old long lost photograph of Myself that was taken way back in 1983, somehow showed up recently.

This is Me, a then 21 year old future host and photographer of Eddie's Railfan Page...mugging for a photo with My good friend Pepper.

At the time of this photo, I was actually cutting grass for an elderly man that lived in My old neighborhood named Frank, who has since passed away. Pepper was His male sheepdog pet and companion.
Pepper was a very friendly and playful dog, who absolutely loved it whenever I would come over. We always played a few rounds of "Fetch" during My visits.

Pepper was a fun dog.

Thanks.

Inside the museum's "New" 2002 carbarn. The Hesston Steam Museum.Hesston Indiana USA. September 2010.

I took this photo during My September 2010 visit to The Hesston Steam Museum. www.hesston.org

Several pieces of narrow gauge locomotives, rolling stock and artifacts, are viewed parked tightly inside the new carbarn that was erected in 2002.

The orange steam locomotive cab to the left, is from a former meter guage 0-8-0 T steam locomotive from Germany. During the 1960's, this locomotive came to America, recieved a mechanical overhaul, and was cosmetically Americanized. This locomotive worked at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo on the two foot narrow guage Brookfield, Salt Creek & Western Railroad from 1967 until 1985. Today it is currently undergoing a restoration.

The engine to the right, is a meter guage 0-4-9T side tank steam locomotive from Czechloslovakia that was built in 1940.

New Haven E P 3A electric locomotive # 352.

I found this photo at My link page Fallen Flags.Org to the right of Your computer screen.

The New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad was an east coast North American railroad. Known for operating Steam, Diesel and Electric locomotives....This railroad was really something else.

Prior to the big, bold and splashy multi colored Mc Ginnis paint scheme introduced during the 1950's, this railroad's elctric locomotives wore a very conservative dark Hunter green with gold stripes and lettering color scheme.

Hello everyone!
Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.

I spotted this historic steam era photograph from the Chicago & North Western Railroad, at My link page Fallen Flags.Org to the right of Your computer screen.

While this photo is only listed as "Chicago Illinois", I would associate this photo having been taken at sometime during the 1930's and 40's era.

The mid 1930's in America, would become known in railroad circles, as "The age of streamlining". Many railroad companies, as well as cross country Motorbus carriers and Automobile manufacturers...began modernizing their images with machines equipped with stylish rounded contours and aerodynamic streamlining.

Ad the era of streamlined diesel locomotives was in it's infant stages, many railroads including the Chicago & Northwestern, began applying streamlined shrouding to make their fast mainline passenger service steam locomotives look more modern.

Digital Live Sound Video: The Hesston Steam Museum. Hesston Indiana USA. Sunday, September 12th, 2010.

I photographed this digital live sound video last September, at The Hesston Steam Museum in northwest Indiana east of Michigan City.

I was exploring the area around the "New" 2002 built museum carbarn with My lovely Wife Cheryl, near the end of the day.

It is approxinmately 5:15 PM, and the Hesston Steam Museum is getting ready to close for te night. The last train of the day on the museum's narrow guage Fling Dutchman Railroad, is viewed slowly heading to the Hesston Junction Depot to disembark the remaining passengers.

The two red wooden open bench coaches, originally worked for the 2 foot guage Brookfield, Salt Creek And western Railroad at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo, from 1967 until 1985.

One popular historic North American transportation subject I have always hd a fascination with, was the era of historic paddle wheel steam boats that used to work on the various rivers, lakes and waterways around America during the 1800's and early 1900's.

Paddle wheel steamers, were built for the most part with hulls designed for operation in shallow waters. They came in two variations, sidewheel and sternwheel The example shown here, is a "Sternwheel" model. Some where used for transporting passengers, while others had less glamorous dutties like pushing barges and hauling freight. Paddle wheels eventually gave way to propellers or "Screws" as they are sometimes refered to. Just as on the railroads, the marine steam engines and boilers eventually gave way to diesel propulasion.

In more recent decades, there have been a small number of steam powered "Replica" sternwheel paddle boats, as well as some small modern diesel powered character replica examples equipped with underwater propellers and free rotating paddle wheels.
The later examples, are often equipped with fake twin smokestacks.

There have also been a number of large diesel powered modern paddle wheel boats, used as gambling casino's on the Missisippi River today.

Hello everyone!
This is Eddie K, Your host and photographer here at Eddie's Railfan Page.

The new year of 2011, is taking shape pretty nicely here so far at My blogsite.
I have been following up on several offers to make public speaking / Railfan
photo slideshow appearances around the greater Chicagoland area in upcoming months.
There is a possibility that I may even be doing an appearance on a public access television show, sponsored by Northeastern University. However...I am a very busy man these days and will look in to the offer when the chaos begins to settle down a little bit. I have a few obligations that I need to take care of first.

My first railfan photo slideshow engagement for 2011, will be held on Saturday, February 5th, 2011 from 2:00 until 4:00 PM. The event will be held at the Jefferson Park Branch of the Chicago Public Library, located at 5363 West Lawrence Avenue in Chicago Illinois.

Due to popular demand, I will once again be showing My homemade musical photo slideshow entitled "When Chicago Rode The Streetcars". This musical photo slideshow, is set to authentic historic period music ranging from Rgtime Piano, Dixieland Jazz, and 1940's era Big Band Standards.

It will be a fun event, and We hope to see You there.

Thank You.

Westbound CTA Skokie Swift train. May 2009.

I photographed this digital live sound video after work one lovely Springtime evening, back in May of 2010.

A westbound Chicago Transit Authority / Skokie Swift train, is viewed entering the long steel trstle spanning nearby Mc Cormick Boulevard, in north suburban Evanston Illinois.
This is a preserved segment of the abandoned Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee electric interurban railroad.

Burlington Northern commuter train approaching the La Grange Road commuter rail station. La Grange Illinois USA. Febuary 1985.

One of My all time personal favoite memories from My early lineside railfanning days, were the many trips I made with a camera in hand, to west suburban La Grange Illinois during the 1980's.

I absolutely loved visiting the town of La Grange Illinois every chance I had. With a very bust three track Chicago to Aurora commuter mainline owned by the Burlington Northern Railroad, I ended up spending many an afternoon out there. Sometimes I would photograph a freight train or two on the east side of town, on the nearby Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad.

Between the train watching activity, friendly people in town and the pleasant stores to visit in downtown La Grange Illinois, this was My second home half of the time.

I still love La Grange Illinois today.

Thanks.

Forest Park Fire Department Chevrolet Paramedic Ambulance # 408. Forest Park Illinois USA. Wednsday, January 18th, 2011.

I took this photo this past Tuesday during My lunch break.

This very modern Chevrolet paramedic ambulance from the west suburban Forest Park Illinois Fire Department, is viewed parked on Randolph Street near Des Plaines Avenue.

The village of Forest Park Illinois, selected a very pleasant and striking color scheme on this vechicle.

Night time at the Edgebrook Metra commuter flagstop depot. Chicago Illinois USA. Wednsday, January 19th, 2011.

I took this photo after work this past Tuesday night.

A southbound Metra local commuter train enroute to Chicago Union Station from Fox Lake Illinois, had just departed from the Edgebrook Metra commuter flagstop depot seen here.

This basic open air shelter depot, is located on the far northwest side of Chicago near the northwest suburban village of Niles Illinois.
It is located just north of the intersection at West Devon and North Lehigh Avenues, in Chicago's Edgebrook neighborhood.

Western Pacific 4-8-2 # 171 leading WP train # 1 The Scenic Limited westbound over the high bridge in northern California's Altamont Pass. 1937.

I found this very classic steam era photograph at My link page Yesteryear Depot.Com to the right of Your computer screen.

The Western Pacific Railroad owned several 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotives. Many were acquired second hand from the Florida East Coast Railroad. The WP used these locomotives in both passenger and freight train service.
