I was passing through downtown Kenosha Wisconsin one very sunny , but bitterly cold January afternoon in 2001. With an outside temperature of 5 degrees above zero Farenheight and a sharp east wind blowing off of nearby Lake Michigan, I photographed the red 1951 vintage ex Toronto Transit Commision PCC electric streetcar heading westbound on 54th Street. Kenosha Wisconsin had recently experienced heavy lake effect snow accumulations, as evidenced by the tall snowbanks along side the electric streetcar lines private right of way.

This old steam era former Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad passenger train station, is located on the Metra / Union Pacific , Northwest line to Harvard Illinois.

The Glenview Dairy Bar at Christmastime. Glenview Illinois USA. December 2008.

A popular seasonal roadside soft serve ice cream stand in the Greater Chicagoland Area, is the Glenview Dairy Bar. Although it has been closed for the season since November 1st and won't open up again until Springtime, the Christmas lights and Holiday decorations help to keep the Glenview Dairy Bar as a colorful place nonetheless. The Glenview Dairy Bar has been serving the North Shore since 1955. It is located just north of the intersection at North Harlem Avenue and Glenview Road near the Glenview Metra commuter rail station.

I can't wait until they open again this spring.

I took this photo on a sunny and snow covered December morning in the year of 2006. This is the very busy Union Pacific Railroad M-19A Diesel locomotive shop, located at 400 North Pulaski Road on Chicago's westside of town. On any given day, one can witness long or short lines of locomotives being serviced here, or idling outside on the ready tracks.

This large indoor year round local Chicago area shopping mall, has a lot to see and enjoy anytime. This is the Sweet Street self service gumball and candy vending concession stand.

I took this photo one cold winter morning in January of 2007. I spotted this unique BNSF Railway "One Car" double stack containter train, just east of South Lawndale Avenue near West 49th Street. This is a special or "Extra" movement waiting to depart from the nearby BNSF Railway Corwith Yard. Once clearance is given from the dispatcher, the train will proceed westbound over the Belt Railway of Chicago heavy branchline track.

I took this lovely Springtime railfan photograph at the Des Plaines Avenue railroad crossing in North Riverside Illinois. It is a lovely and warm Springtime morning with outside temperatures around 68 drgrees Farenheight. A westbound Canadian National freight train, is seen passing the railroad crossing on Des Plaines Avenue adjacent to Commons Park. This is the former Illinois Central Railroad, Iowa Division Mainline.

I photographed this video on Friday, October 31st, 2008 in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood east of South Damen Avenue just south of Blue Island Avenue. This is a former Burlington Northern Railroad industrial branchline, that is owned and operated today by the shortline railroad Central Ilinois Railroad. The railroad was having an open house public relations event on this day. With the switching chores all done, locomotive # 1206, a rebuilt 1950's era EMD model SW-9 yard switcher, is seen heading for the interchange just west of here at South Western and Blue Island Avenues in the city of Chicago Illinois. The locomotive was recently repainted in to the pre 1970 predecessor railroad Chicago, Burlington & Quincy "Heritage" paint scheme.

I took this photo on a partly sunny and somewhat mild December day in the year of 2006. It is mid December, and the outside temperature is a pleasant 50 degrees Farenheight. It didn't last too long though, because within a week or so the temperatures had dropped and snow had soon followed. This eastbound CP Rail train is passing the railroad crossing on 25th Avenue in downtown Franklin Park Illinois.

I took this photo at work one evening, in December of 2008. My company's mechanics always seem to have their hands full, maintaining a fleet of paratransit buses such as ours at First Transit. The bus to the right, is our company's training bus, while the one on the right, is one of our older 2001 Chevrolet models in for some much needed mechanical attention.

I took this photo at work one evening in December of 2008. I had just dropped off a special needs passenger in north suburban Prospect Heights Illinois, and just couldn't resist the opportunity to photograph My assigned bus on the road in a Winter sunset atmosphere. On this day I was driving a 2001 Ford Econoline Series paratransit bus # 5126. It is one of My company's older buses, but it is exceptionally good running. It is a well maintained piece of equipment, and I enjoy driving bus # 5126 occasionally.

I took this photo on a sunny and somewhat mild December afternoon in the year of 1986. I didn't own My first car yet, and have happy memorys of visiting Chicago's Mount Greenwood neighborhood via the Chicago Transit Authority bus lines. I mostly took the Route # 52A South Kedzie Avenue line, but occasionally rode the Route # 53A South Pulaski Route as well. Shown here, is a 1970's era CTA GMC Fishbowl windshield TDH series "New Look" transit bus. These were the standard day to day buses in use by the CTA during this period of time. They were officially retired in 1996. The bus is in the left turning lane on South Pulaski Road, and will soon turn left and head to the South Terminal at West 111th Street and South Springfield Avenue.

Heavy lake effect snowstorms fell all night throug out the Greater Chicagoland Area, and the near northwest suburban village of River Grove Illinois wasn't spared any of Mother Natures punishment on this day. I took this photo one summer morning, in June of 2007. The crew of a westbound Canadian National transfer freight train, has just recieved the clearance order on the radio from the dispatcher, and is now slowly proceeding toward the railroad crossing on Des Plaines Avenue in west suburban North Riverside Illinois. The train is traveling over the former Illinois Central Railroad, Iowa Division Mainline. The Canadian National Railroad had already acquired the Illinois Central through a 1999 merger.

I took this photo in the rural farming hamlet of Richfield Illinois. The occasion was the Metra / Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad EMD E-8 Last run fantrip. This excursion special operated between Chicago and Harvard Illinois, over the Metra / Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad, Northwest Line to Harvard Illinois. Metra and C&NW, were retiring their last three 1st generation EMD model E-8 passenger diesel locomotives that were built in the early 1950's, and originally were assigned to haul pre Amtrak passenger trains. Seen here are several on board railfan photographers detraining for a series of lineside photo runbys.

A northbound Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad transfer freight train, is seen passing through the seasonal straw brown early Winter scenery at Argo Junction in Summit Illinois. The train is being headed up by two rebuilt EMD 1st Generation EMD model NW-2 yard switcher locomotives.

I took this photo one night in early October of 2008. I was on the way home from visiting My family in Bridgeview Illinois, and just couldn't resist the opportunity to stop and do a little nocturnal railfanning on the BNSF Railway in west suburban Berwyn Illinois. I took this photo on the south platform at the Berwyn commuter rail station, located on South Oak Park Avenue and West Windsor Street. I did video an eastbound BNSF Railway freight train slowing down for the approach to nearby Clyde Yard in Cicero Illinois, but also took some still photos like this one too.

One of the pleasant vacation surprises I have found on My travels, are those occasional relics from railroad eras past on display. This old 2-6-0 mogul
type steam locomotive, is on display in Chattanooga Tennesee, at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hilton Hotel. This is the former Chattanooga Tennesee Union Passenger train terminal, turned in to a museum and hotel. This locomotive unfortunately, has been cosmetically backdated to look like a locomotive You would see in a Western Movie of some kind. Still, it is preserved for all to see.

A very heavy all morning Lake Effect snowstorm had fallen on the Greater Chicagoland Area, on Friday, December 1st, 2006. Seen here in the afternoon around 2:30 PM approximately one hour after the snowstorm had stopped, is an eastbound Canadian Pacific Railroad transfer freight train. The train is approaching the Metra, River Grove commuter rail station on Thatcher Avenue.

I was out riding My 12 speed mountain bicycle one hot August afternoon in 1990, when I took this photo at the South Kostner Avenue railroad crossing in south suburban Alsip Illinois. A speeding northbound CSX Transportation Company freight train, is seen passing the South Kostner Avenue railroad crossing near West 118th Street. This was one of several freight trains that passed through here that day, traveling over the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad mainline.

The old Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad Mc Cook depot. ( Gone.) Mc Cook Illinois USA. Early October 1983.

One of the most rare photographs in My archives, is this one I had taken back in My early railfan photography days. I was a 21 year old beginer at 35mm photography when I took this photo in Mc Cook Illinois. This was the former Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad Mc Cook passenger depot, wich had stood east of the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad crosstracks at Mc Cook Junction. This depot had long since seen it's last passenger train stop here, and was being used as a storage building by the time of My October 1983 visit. I had only taken this one photograph, and I am very sorry today that I didn't take more that day. Not long after My visit, the old station building was demolished.

I took this photo in March of 1987, at the intersection of Cermak Road and Oak Park Avenue in west suburban Berwyn Illinois. Although I had only ate here at the Greek owned Seneca restaurant with My family a handful of times during the 1980's, My dinnertime visits here were quiete pleasant and appetizing.

I photographed the building prior to it's demolition, after a grease fire had destroyed this beautiful 1920's era sand colored brick store front building. Buildings like this were once plentiful along Cermak Road in Berwyn Illinois, before the glut of small strip malls took over the local commercial landscape around the greater Chicagoland area.

Today, this is the site of a Burger King fast food restaurant.

I photographed this speeding eastbound Union Pacific freight train at the North Kilbourn Avenue railroad crossing, one overcast Spring morning in April of 2006. The lead locomotives are still wearing the colors of pre 1998 predecessor railroad Chicago & NorthWestern. These General Electric wide cab model AC 4400 CW heavy duty locomotives,were the last diesel locomotives ordered new by the Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad in 1994.

I was taking railfan photos on location here with My good friend and fellow Chicago railfan buddy Anthony C at the Chicago city limits on the border at west suburban Cicero Illinois. A four unit set of BNSF Railway locomotives running light, are seen crossing the Canadian National ex Illinois Central crosstracks at Hawthorne Junction. The locomotives are traveling over the Belt Railway of Chicago tracks, returning to the nearby BNSF Railway, Clyde Yard in Cicero Illinois on a hot summer afternoon.

The demolition of the Jakter Hotel. Chicago Illinois USA. Febuary 1983.

An interesting and sometimes overlooked sideline to My many Chicago area railfan photographs, are the many random snap shots or neighborhood images I began photographing just for the heck of it during the 1980's. I took this photo in Febuary of 1983, looking towards the southeast corner at the intersection of West 47th Street and South Kedzie Avenue in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood. Seen here during the demolition operation, is the seedy , run down, and very transient Jakter Hotel. This old school "Skid Row" type of transient hotel was recently closed for good. Today, it is the site of a small strip mall.

During the late 1800's, this building was used as a relay station for America's first transcontinental telephone call. This old brick building unfortunately gained low class undesireable fame in later years as a transient hotel with a basement strip club and an in house prostitution ring ( Supposidly.) A few people I spoke to said that it had an all night lounge, and many local alchohaulic bar flies would come here after the other places had closed, or on Sunday mornings when no other bars were open for business yet.

During the 1980's, I had spent a considerable amount of time photographing the Burlington Northern Railroad in Chicago's western suburbs. I took this photo on a mild Autum Saturday afternoon, in October of 1989. Two early 1960's vintage EMD model GP-30 roadswitchers, are seen passing through west suburban Hindsdale Illinois with a piggyback train. Begining in the mid 1980's, the Burlington Northern began experimenting with various color scheme adaptations. This is one of their unique experimantal color schemes from the late 1980's, known as the "White Face" image. It was more than likely experimented with for grade crossing safety.

The train is heading to Chicago Union Station over the Canadian Pacific ex Milwaukee Road mainline.

During the mid to late 1980's, I had frequently visited west suburban La Grange Illinois to do some lineside railfanning with My 35MM camera in hand. I took this photo on a Febuary 1986 visit to the Burlington Northern Railroad mainline in town. This eastbound Southern Pacific Railroad run thru piggyback trailer train, was spotted at the Stone Avenue, Metra commuter rail station.

One of My favorite Chicago railroad office building landmarks from many years ago, was the former Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad headquarters on South Michigan Avenue near the Chicago Lakefront. This office facility later moved it's operations to Schaumburg Illinois. In 1995, the Burlington Northern Railroad, and the Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad had merged and became todays BNSF Railway. I am not sure, but I believe that the old Santa Fe neon rooftop sign may still there today.

I took this photo one afternoon in January of 1987. We are looking west from the South Pulaski Road overpass bridge, over the Belt Railway of Chicago, Clearing Yard. We are on the east or "Chicago" side of this huge railroad freight yard, as the crew of a GTW freight train, waits for clearance orders from the dispatcher to depart Clearing Yard. An all morning snowstorm, has blanketed the Greater Chicagoland area, as seen here in the fresh winter landscape at Clearing Yard.

I was looking through some old photographs I had taken while railfanning during the 1980's....and found this unique treasure in My archives. This photo was taken way back in January in the year of 1987. We are looking east on Burlington Avenue, across the street from the Burlington Northern owned Amtrak / Metra commuter rail station. It has been 22 years since I had taken this photograph, and I am planning on taking this with Me, and comparing it on location, to see what has come and gone storefront business wise since then sometime soon.

La Grange was always a favorite place I had enjoyed visiting for many years.

I took this photo on a bitterly cold and windy winter morning, in January of 2007. I faced a sharp and very stinging wind blowing out of the west, and photographed this eastbound speeding BNSF Railway intermodal trailer train, or "Piggy Back" as some people still call it, passing through the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad crosstracks at Mc Cook Junction. It was worth the effort in all of that bitter cold.

The nice thing one can experience photographing on location during mainline, high iron style railfanning, are the occasional "Foreign" or "Run Thru" freight trains traveling over the host railroad. I spotted this eastbound CSX Transportation Company intermodal freight train, passing the Metra, Western Springs commuter rail depot, on the BNSF Railway 3 track Chicago to Aurora mainline.

This two train meet was photographed at the Harding Avenue railroad crossing, on the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad line.

I took this photo during an August 1990 vacation when I had visited Strasburg Pennsylvania. The last train of the day is seen heading westbound at sunset behind
2-10-0 type steam locomotive # 90. Once the train arrives at the East Strasburg depot, the locomotive will uncouple from the vintage wooden passenger train consist, and be put to bed for the night at the enginehouse.

I took this photo one morning, in January of 2007. Chicago's Edgebrook, neighborhood community, is located at the Chicago city limits near Skokie Illinois along West Devon Avenue, near the intersections of Lehigh and Caldwell Avenues. Several daily Metra commuter locals make station stops here at the Edgebrook flagstop depot. Metra trains operating between Chicago and Fox Lake Illinois stop or pass through here.

The annual Christmas Holiday season in 2008, was particularly colorful and quiete memorable around the Greater Chicagoland Area. I took this photo one cold December night just after work in 2008. We are looking west on Glenview Road just west of the intersection at North Harlem Avenue. The north suburban village of Glenview Illinois, and their hard dedicated hard working staff at the Glenview Public Works, did a fine job of decorating the village lamp posts. Glenview looked especially festive in 2008.

I took this photo one Sunday afternoon, in November of 1987. A southbound Soo Line transfer train has recieved clearance from the dispatcher, and is now passing underneath the West 31st Street overpass bridge at the border of west suburban Cicero Illinois. The train will soon be passing over the Illinois Central Gulf crosstracks at Hawthorne Junction just a 1/2 mile south of the bridge, and continue southbound to the Belt Railway of Chicago, Clearing Yard in Bedford Park Illinois.

of the food before I could photograph it. These are some of the tasty things We enjoyed eating for Thanksgiving, and We were so greatful for it all. It was a tasty celebration spent with family.
