I took this photo on a May 1990 Central Electric Railfan Association fantrip excursion, over the three former Illinois Central electric commuter lines. Originally steam powered, these lines were electrified in 1926.One of the original Illinois Central commuter steam locomotives, is preserved today at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union Illinois. That locomotive -Illinois Central 201, was built by the Rogers Locomotive Works in 1880. It was steamed at the Chicago Railroad Fair of 1948 and 1949.
Our excursion train is seen parked at the old Vermont Street Station in south suburban Blue Island Illinois. The station was demolished in recent years, and a new modern station facility occupies the site today. Notice the wooden platforms.
