Crossing Signal Technology. May 2006.

Hello everyone!

Welcome to Eddie's Railfan Page. This photograph was taken by Me, in southwest suburban "Hodgkins" Illinois in May of 2006. This is an example of Changing Technology. The old "Solonoid" operated bells, are gradually being replaced by "Electronic" types as seen on top of this signal mast. The electronic bells are actually "Pleasant" on ones ears, but also the sound carries for quiete some distance as well. They have gained considerable popularity, and are rapidly becoming the Industry Standard. This crossing signal is located on east 67th Street, on the BNSF railroad line.

I'm really sad that about two years ago, part of the Grand Trunk line that ran parallel to County Road 525 South in LaPorte County, IN at County Road 800 East was removed. The crossing was "protected" by a wooden railroad sign shaped like the one in your photo but with the words, "stop, look, listen written on it. All of 2 or 3 cars a day passed by this rural crossing. No electric lights, no bells, nothing but two pieces of wood nailed onto a 4x4! I really wish I was there to ask for the old sign. It was a novelty back in the 80's and 90's and I should have taken a photo of it. Next weekend I'm going hunting for a crossing like this - I'll send a photo.

On another note, according to your mate Ian's site, you're a "Gricer."
