I photographed this modern example , of an overlooked everyday tool of railroad operations. This detailed photo of a modern manual thrown switch stand, was photographed at the Canadian National Railroad's former Illinois Central Crawford Yard on Chicago's near southwest side. This switch, is actually a branch line lead, that leads to some nearby industrial spur siding tracks just south of the yard.
Modern switch throw levers today, feature a shovel handle design for easy gripping and leaverage. The reflective green and red target, shows the train crews wich way the track switch has been thrown.
