I visited the former Illinois Central RR Crawford Yard on south Kostner Avenue after work one day, in Febuary of 2007. Chicago Illinois was in the midst of a notorious "Deep Freeze" condition.
Many water mains were breaking below the city streets, and many houses experienced pipes bursting. The Chicago Fire Department was experiencing numerous problems with frozen fire hydrants requiring the use of blow torches to thaw the internal ice. The outside temperature was only 8 above zero when I took this photo, but the wind out of the west made it feel like 10 below. Although My face was litterally "Stinging", I obtained this great winter sunset photograph.
The large building in the background to the right, is the Commonwealth Edison Crawford Generating station. This building is an Icon on Chicago's southwest side near 35Th Street and South Pulaski Road.
