Happy December memorys from 2006. Holiday Decorations in suburban River Grove Illinois.

Seen here on a lampost adjacent to the River Grove Public Library on w Grand Avenue, is an example of the many festive light up decorations that light up the town, and help to spread seasonal holiday cheer to all.
December of 2006 was a very happy time for Myself and My wife and family.

Your host and photographer in December of 2006.

Here I am at home after work. December 2006 was a great month for Chicago Area railfan photography, and between My work day demands and all the occasional photographic opportunities, I am exhausted at the end of it all.
December 2006 started out with a heavy snowstorm on Friday December 1st, and I had plenty of winter Christmas Card style snow scenes for two weeks at least. Shortly after that, Chicago's weather turned mild and springlike for the rest of the month of December. We had a Muddy Christmas instead of a white one. Still...I had a lot of happy railfan memories to share from December of 2006.

EMD Demonstrator. Union Pacific Railroad M-19 Diesel Shop. Chicago Illinois USA. December 2006.

I am not sure exactly what EMD Model Number this is, but I spotted it at the Union Pacific Railroad M-19 Diesel Shop at 400 n Pulaski Rd on Chicago's westside back in December of 2006. I was on My way to a sales appointment with a prospective business manager, and only had time to get out and take a brief snapshot enroute.
I have never seen a color scheme like this.
It's like a Psychadelic Great Northern.
Far out man. Groovy. (Yeah -right.)

Westbound Norfolk Southern train on CP Rail trackage. Elmwood Park Illinois USA. December 2006.

A westbound Norfolk Southern RR transfer /run through freight train passes through NW suburban Elmwood Park Illinois on a cloudy and cold December morning in 2006. I took this digital photograph on My way to work one morning. This is the former Milwaukee Road mainline. A very busy line in the greater Chicagoland area, with frequent Metra -Norfolk Southern -Canadian Pacific -and Iowa Chicago and Eastern RR freight trains passing through.

Were going home at last. Metra train at Hanson Park Station. Chicago Illinois USA. December 2006.

A long work day has come to a close for many Chicago area workers commuting downtown.
A westbound Metra commuter train prepares to head into a lovely winter sunset, taking many people home for the night.

A westbound Metra commuter train stops for passengers at the Metra Western Avenue station on Chicago's near northside. This train is bound for the Elgin Illinois / Big Timber road station. The diesel locomotive is an MP-36 Ph built by Motive Power Industries of Boise Idaho USA. These are Metra's "Newest" diesel locomotives. They had replaced the old EMD F-40C models that were built in 1974 and used exclusively on this former Milwaukee Road line.

Track Inspectors Ford pick up truck. The Belt Railway of Chicago. 55th St Junction. January 2007.

I was passing by one of My old High School days railfan hangouts from My Curie High School days, and stopped to see how 55th Street Junction near Midway Airport looks like these days.
Luckily I photographed the tower back in April of 1984, because it was demolished by 1990.
Seen here heading south to Clearing Yard at 70th and Knox Street, is a BRC Maintenance dept foreman about to pass over the crosstracks.
I attended nearby Curie High School from the years of 1977 to 1981. 55Th Street Jct is a much different place in 2007.

Orange Indianna Harbor Belt diesels working Argo Yard. Summit Illinois USA. January 2007.

The sky was gray and the air was cold on this January day in Chicagoland, but the Indianna Harbor Belts bright orange diesels compensated for a lack of sunshine. They are a colorful sight.

Southbound Canadian Pacific freight train at Hawthorne Junction. Chicago Illinois USA. January 2007.

Old color schemes die hard. A southbound Canadian Pacific freight train, with diesels still painted and lettered for the Soo Line Railroad, is approaching the Junction with the Canadian National RR's former Illinois Central Iowa division mainline. The Canadian Pacific Railroad bought out the old Soo Line Railroad through merger in 1990. 17 years later, there is still plenty of Soo Line painted equipment to be seen in Chicago, including wide vision cabooses too.
Chicago winter railroading in the 21st century.
The crew on this train saluted Me with a toot on their air horns and a friendly wave.

Northbound Canadian National freight train on the Belt Railway of Chicago. Hawthorne Junction. Chicago Illinois USA. January 2007.

Crossing the former Illinois Central crosstracks at Hawthorne Junction, is a northbound Canadian National Railroad freight train. Prior to 1990, a wooden interlocking tower stood where that silver signal cabinet behind the small Chain Link fence is seen to the left of the photo.
Hawthorne Junction is located just east of the suburban village of Cicero Illinois.

Eastbound Canadian Pacific covered hopper train. Hanson Park Station. Chicago Illinois USA. January 2007.

Moving east under the n Central Avenue overpass bridge, is a Canadian Pacific Railroad unit grain train heading toward the interchange with the Belt Railway of Chicago at Craigin Junction. Once clearance is approaved at the
junction, the CP Rail train will proceed south to the Belt Railway of Chicago's Clearing Yard, in southwest suburban Bedford Park Illinois USA.
A light snow was falling at the time of this photo.

A blast from the past! Manufacturers Junction Railroad interchange local. Chicago Illinois USA. January 2007.

This locomotive is an old EMD SW-1 diesel switcher wich goes back to the steam to diesel transition era (1940's and 50's) and so does the Demonstrator style color scheme it's wearing.
I photographed this scene at Hawthorne Junction, wich is at the Chicago city limits with the suburban village of Cicero Illinois. This crosstrack junction is where the north /south Belt Railway of Chicago line, crosses the Canadian National Railroad's former Illinois Central Iowa division mainline. Seen here on the northbound interchange curve track, is a 3 car local that the MJ Railroad has picked up from the CN Hawthorne Yard in Cicero Illinois. The MJ is a little industrial shortline approximately a little over a mile long. The grassy hill seen in the background is the abandoned Bel Aire Drive In movie theatre at w 31st Street and s Cicero Ave.

Preserved Illinois Central caboose. Lemont Illinois USA. January 2007.

This old 1970's era wide vision caboose from the former Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, can be seen in the village of Lemont Illinois. This caboose is the centerpiece of a Civic display known as the
"Lemont Safety Village", wich is located on the east side of Lemont -adjacent to the Illinois and Michigan Canal near the north bank of the old waterway. Lemont is a nice town to visit and is
located in the vicinity of the citties of Lockport -
Willow Springs -Romeoville -and Joliet Illinois.

Westbound Norfolk Southern Railroad locomotives on BNSF trackage. Mc Cook Illinois USA. January 2007.

A cold and windy morning in January of 2007, finds a westbound UPS intermodal trailer train passing through suburban Mc Cook Illinois. This train is being handled by 2 Norfolk Southern Railroad diesel locomotives instead of the usual orange BNSF ones normally seen on this line.
I have been seeing a lot of Norfolk Southern "Run Through" and transfer operations on the BNSF lately, as well as their engines mixed in with BNSF units on freight trains. A possible merger?

BNSF Clyde Yard. Cicero Illinois USA. January 2007.

Seen here on the north side of Clyde Yard adjacent to w 26th Street, is a 2 unit set
of EMD roadswitchers making up an intermodal container train. The lead unit is in the EMD Demonstrator / Lease -color scheme, while the 2nd unit is in the current BNSF color scheme.
Bright sunny days like this require one to wear
sunglasses to help one cope with bright glare conditions associated with sun and snow.

Sunrise in suburban Elmwood Park Illinois USA. January 2007.

Good morning everybody!
Welcome to Eddie's Railfan Page.
I took this photograph one morning in January of 2007, as I was leaving My home to go to work.
A new day was begining, and I was fortunate enough to capture the beautiful bright colors the rising sun projected onto the cloud formations.
This view is looking east on George Street.
If one uses their imagination, this could be a scene out of the song "Beautiful Morning" wich was a big hit recording for the 1960's pop music group known as "The Rascals" back in 1968.
Yes, it was a beautiful morning, and a great day.

Eastbound Canadian Pacific switching move. Franklin Park Illinois USA. January 2007.

An eastbound CP Rail EMD roadswitcher with one car in tow, has just cleared the railroad crossing on Scott Street in NW suburban Franklin Park Illinois.

Westbound Norfolk Southern morning freight train on CP Rail.mainline. Chicago Illinois USA. December 2006.

I took this photo at the Metra "Montclair" station at the Chicago city limits with suburban Elmwood Park Illinois. A fast westbound Norfolk Southern Railroad freight train is leaving Chicago and entering suburban Elmwood Park Illinois in a short distance of 2 city blocks east of Harlem Ave. This is the Canadian Pacific Railroads former Milwaukee Road mainline. Many of the freight trains on this line are Transfer trains going or coming from CP Rails Bensenville Yard, to the Belt Railway of Chicago's Clearing Yard in southwest suburban Bedford Park Illinois.

Craigin Junction. Chicago Illinois USA. December 2006.

Seen above waiting on the BRC /CP interchange curve connecting track, is a soon to be westbound Canadian Pacific Railroad transfer train. We are at "Craigin Junction" just east of the intersection of Cicero and Grand Avenues on Chicago's northside. This is where the Belt Railway of Chicago's north / south connecting line ends -and the east / west Canadian Pacific -Ex Milwaukee Road mainline connects. Notice the 2nd unit still in Milwaukee Road orange and black color scheme and the last unit in Soo Line "Red" color scheme. The Soo Line bought out the very bankrupt Milwaukee Road through merger in 1985, and the Canadian Pacific bought out the Soo Line railroad in the year of 1990 through merger likewise. Old paint schemes live on, 2006.

Varied steam railroad operations. The Hesston Steam Museum. Hesston Indiana USA. August 2005.

3 different demonstration train rides can be experienced at the Hesston Steam museum in NW indiana, near the border town of New Buffalo Michigan. The little station to the far left serves the 7 and 1/2 inch guage miniature Live Steam railroad, the middle line with the Green side tank locomotive is the Dual Narrow or Meter guage 2 and 3 ft tracks , and the track to the far right is the 14 Inch guage live steam train ride. The green 0-4-0 side tank steam locomotive, is a small industrial locomotive from Czechloslovakia built in 1940 , while the red open coaches behind it, were originally from the Chicago's very own
Brookfield Zoo. The Brookfield Zoo had a 2 ft narrow guage railroad from 1967 to 1985. The 14 inch guage steam locomotive to the right is a 4-6-4 Hudson Type (Passenger) and operated on the late great Elliot Donnelley's private estate. (Family of R.H Donnelley Publishing Co.)
This is a very nice museum to take Your family to visit in N.W Indianna, approximately
2 hours travel time from Chicago Illinois.

The 14 inch guage train. The Hesston Steam Museum. Hesston Indiana USA. August 2005.

The demonstration railroad operations are quiete varied at the Hesston Steam Museum. There are the large dual guage (2ft and 3ft) narrow or Meter guage trains -there is a 14 inch guage demonstration train ride -and a miniature
7 and i/2 inch guage live steam rail line too.
The 14 inch guage train is normally pulled by
a 4-6-4 Hudson type steam locomotive or a
4 -4 -0 American Type turn of the century
replica locomotive. On My August 2005 visit...
they were also using this homemade "Boxcab"
early diesel locomotive. This locomotive is normally used on the 14 inch guage Maintenance
of way train, used in museum support operations. Track does have to be ballasted too.

Westbound CTA Archer Avenue GM bus. Chicago Illinois USA. April 1989.

Hello everyone!
Welcome aboard "Eddie's Railfan Page".
Today is "Bus Day" here at My blog site, the first one for 2007 actually. I hope these photos will bring back some happy memories to all My fellow and former Chicagoans out in computer land,

Seen here in April of the year 1989, is a westbound CTA 1970's vintage GMC bus, rolling out it's final years after being rebuilt. The paint scheme shown here was introduced in 1989, and had replaced the previous tow tone green and cream colors Chicago knew for many years.
The old General Motors buses like the one shown here, were all retired by 1996.

Privately owned West Towns Bus Company # 776. The Midwest Transit Bus Museum. Cresthill Illinois USA. September 2000.

This is an old 1950 GM bus that had served Chicago's near western suburbs for many years. The sign for Ridgeland Avenue indicates that this bus worked in Berwyn Illinois, and had also served Lyons -Cicero -Brookfield -La Grange -
Maywood -and Oak Park as well.
Life before "Pace" indeed.

Interior view of West Towns Bus Company # 776, a 1950 GM transit coach. The Midwest Transit Bus Museum. Cresthill Illinois USA. September 2000.

This is a scene out of My own Childhood growing up in Chicago during the 1960's and 70's.
This is an interior view of a preserved 1950
General Motors transit bus. This bus was purchased secondhand actually from San Diego California during the 1960's, and was used by the West Towns Bus Company in Chicago's western suburbs until 1979. The Chicago Transit Authority was using buses like this until 1972. The CTA ones I rode on had two tone green interiors and dark green soft seats. Notice the individual incadescent interior ceiling lights -tinted standee windows -and soft vinyl seats.

Chicago Transit Authority 1951 electric trolley bus. The Illinois Railway Museum. Union Illinois USA. September 1982.

This is a CTA bus that served the city of Chicago from 1951 to 1973. The bus seen here is a preserved 1951 trolley coach from the Marmon Herrington Co.
This bus was from an order of 300 for the Chicago Transit Authority, and it would be the "Last" order for new CTA trolley buses. Around 1959, The CTA began to slowly phase out electric bus operations on some of the former streetcar routes that had been converted to twin overhead wire operations. The last operations for electric CTA trolleybuses took place on March 24th 1973.
I rode on and witnessed these unique electric buses during their final years of operation when I was growing up in Chicago, and I miss them.

Chicago Transit Authority "Wrecker" truck. Oak Park Illinois USA. Early October 2006.

Seen here heading east on Lake Street, is a red CTA tow truck, or "Wrecker" as they were known for many years.
These emergency vechicles have come to the rescue of many a disabled bus. During the electric streetcar days, these trucks were used to tow many disabled trolley cars back to their respective repair barns.
Just as they were going back to streetcar or electric bus days, these large maintenance tow trucks are still "Red"
after all of these years.

Southbound CTA Rt # 86 Naragansett bus. Corner of Naragansett and Belmont Avenues. Chicago Illinois USA. October 2006.

A sunny but quiete chilly autum morning in the city of Chicago, was photographed on Chicago's northside. A Chicago Transit Authority 1991
Flxible Metro transit coach has just picked up a morning commuter passenger, and is proceeding south past the intersection at w Belmont Avenue.

Small Pace bus. Western Springs Illinois USA. September 2006.

One evening after work last year, I was feeling alright and took a drive to the west subrban
village of Western Springs Illinois. I had My digital camera with Me and took some very nice photographs around sunset.
Seen here in downrown Western Springs Illinois, is a small Pace bus used on routes with light ridership, but yet still important to maintain.
Small buses like this one, 30 feet or less in lenght, are referred to by My fellow "Bus Fans" as being
"Baby Buses".

Your host and photographer in 1986.

Hey look!
It's Reggie from the Archies!
Ha ha ha!
This is how I looked around the time I was taking
all those nice mid 1980's Chicago area railfan photos that appear here on Eddie's Railfan Page.

Westbound Union Pacific Railroad transfer train. Clearing Yard. Bedford Park Illinois USA. March 1985.

Heading west and entering the Belt Railway of Chicago's Clearing Yard in suburban Bedford Park Illinois, is a Union Pacific RR transfer train.
The 3rd diesel locomotive in blue paint, is a secondhand General Electric roadswitcher acquired through merger by the Union Pacific
from the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1982.

Eastbound Union Pacific RR transfer train. Hayford Junction. Chicago Illinois USA. March 1985.

Seen here approaching the Grand Trunk Western RR crosstracks, after leaving the Belt Railway of Chicago's Clearing Yard, is an eastbound Union Pacific Railroad transfer train. Notice the 2nd blue diesel locomotive in Missouri Pacific markings. The Union Pacific acquired the Missouri Pacific RR in a 1982 merger. The flatcars behind the locomotives are hauling automobile frames.

Railfan Excursion to the Fox River Trolley Museum. May 1983.

In late May of 1983, a group of local Chicago area Railfans from the Central Electric Railfans association boarded a bus, and headed out to the Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin Illinois. I was on this one day charter with a railfan acqaintance named Jeff, that I had met in My alma matter Curie High School a few years earlier. It was a fun outing that day.

Chicago, Aurora & Elgin car # 20. The Fox River Trolley Museum. South Elgin Illinois USA. May 1983.

C,A & E car # 20, is America's "Oldest operating" interurban coach, as it was built in 1902. It worked for the C,A,& E predecessor company at the begining of operations in 1902, until the C,A & E went out of business in 1957. This car was restored in the final C,A & E color scheme of bright red, and very light blue/ gray around the side windows.

Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee RR silverliner coach. The Fox River Trolley Museum. South Elgin Illinois USA. May 1983.

This electric interurban coach originally travelled daily between Chicago Illinois and Milwaukee Wisconsin, on the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad. This railroad's cars were allso equipped with 3rd rail shoes, and had entered and departed downtown Chicago Illinois via the CTA elevated rapid transit lines. That silver fluting on the sides is actually "Painted On" to look like modern streamliner equipment.
This was done by the company in 1950 to modernize it's image. The C,N S,& M was bankrupt in it's final years, and ended all operations in January of 1963.

Chicago,Aurora& Elgin RR wooden interurban coaches. The Fox River Trolley Museum. South Elgin Illinois USA. May 1983.

Seen here rounding a curve on the museum's demonstration line, is a 3 car train of C,A&,E
wooden interurban M.U (multiple unit) coaches. These wooden passenger coaches dated from the early 1900's, and were in daily service on the Chicago,Aurora & Elgin railroad, until passenger service was discontinued in 1957. The lead car is painted in the C,A & E's 1930's color scheme of dark red and tan colors. The old Chicago, Aurora & Elgin mainline, is now the Illinois Prairie Path.
The old station in suburban Villa Park Illinois is preserved and is used as a drug store.

Southbound Norfolk Southern RR transfer train on BRC trackage. Chicago Illinois USA. October 2006.

Seen here just south of Madison Street on Chicago's westside, is a southbound NS freight train waiting for it's turn to proceed south to Clearing Yard. Approximately 30 or so feet ahead of this train on the same track, is another "Stopped" train waiting for clearance. These are railroad "Bottleneck" traffic jams that could sometimes take several hours to clear up. Many people are just not aware as to how much time professional railroad crews spend
"Waiting" just to get into a terminal destination.
This train is on the Belt Railway of Chicago trackage.

Southbound CSX intermodal transfer train. Brighton Junction. Chicago Illinois USA. October 2006.

I was passing through the area of Archer and Western Avenues on Chicago's southwest side, on an overcast morning in October of 2006.
A southbound CSX Transportation intermodal train has recieved clearance from the dispatcher, and is proceeding south across the Canadian National's former Illinois Central crosstracks.
The lead locomotive is painted in the CSX
"Dark Future" color sceme that was introduced a few years ago, while the other units are in the earlier CSX scheme that hails from the 1980's.

The original "Sears" headquarters at 906 south Homan Avenue. (Whats left of it.) Chicago Illinois USA. December 2006.

This photo is very special to Me, as My family used to shop here occasionally during the 1960's when I was a kid.
This was the original Sears Robuck and Co Headquarters building at 906 south Homan Avenue on Chicago's westside.

Today, the Sears Robuck and Co is headquartered in far northwest suburban Hoffman Estates Illinois. This tower is all thats left of a once huge mail order center and store. I believe the building itself was demolished during the 1990's, but the tower was saved for some historical signifigance. The property is since being redeveloped with new housing where the building used to stand.

When I was growing up as a little boy during the 1960's in Chicago, My family would occasionally take the CTA Route
# 82 Homan / Kimball bus to the front door of the place, and
spend a pleasant afternoon shopping here. The workers were very friendly and courteous. Most every trip I made here usually involved Me getting a "Milk Shake" in the stores cafeteria, or "Popcorn" from a very fragrent candy counter concession. Mmmmmm!
I can still remeber a traffic cop blowing his whistle for pedestrian traffic in front of the store at Rush Hour. "Twee-eeeeet!" Lets Go! Twee-eeeeet -Twee-eeeet!"

The Chicago Transit Authority was using 1950's vintage "Propane" buses from the Flxible Twin Coach Co on this route back then. My family informed Me after viewing this photograph, that
My deceased Grandmother worked and retired from here many years ago.

The Railroad line on the adjacent concrete viaduct, was the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad. I can vaguely recall seeing B&OCT switching locals, as well as Soo Line trains working
this line during the 1960's and early 70's.
This is a happy memory from a forgotten piece of Chicago.

Thank You.
Eddie.

Amtrak coach yard and maintenance facility. Chicago Illinois USA. December 2006.

I took this photo looking south from the West Roosevelt Road bridge, just outside of downtown Chicago Illinois. Several Superliner coaches as well as a General Electric "Genesis Series" P-40 passenger diesel locomotive, are being serviced.
The coaches are in the late 1990's "Northeast Direct" color scheme, while the G.E diesel locomotive to the left is in the Acella color scheme.

Eastbound Canadian Pacific freight train. Franklin Park Illinois USA. December 2006.

December in Chicago started out with a heavy snowstorm, with 12 inches of snow predicted on December 1st 2006. Within 2 weeks...The weather turned unseasonably warm, the heavy snow melted, and the last weeks of december looked and felt more like March instead.

I took this photograph on location in northwest suburban Franklin Park Illinois just before the Christmas holiday. A colorful red two unit set of diesels are leaving nearby Bensenville Yard with a large freight train and heading east past 25th
Avenue.

Westbound evening Metra commuter train at N Kilbourn and West Kinzie Avenues. Chicago Illinois USA. December 2006.

Heading home at last!
A crowd of tired rush hour commuters are now
going home for the night. This westbound Metra
train is enroute to Elburn Illinois, via the Union
Pacific "West Line". Prior to the 1998 merger and acquisition by the Union Pacific Railroad...This
was the former Chicago & NorthWestern RR.

Farewell 2006. A new begining for an old railfan, and a great year for Chicago railfanning!

Hello everybody!
Happy new year from Eddie's Railfan Page!
Today, we will be looking back at what was for Me, a great year for Chicago railfaning.
After many years of sitting in storage, many of My old 1980's vintage railfan photographs were finally put on photo CD's. Not long after that, My good friend "Tom" from My links page "Tom's photos and comments helped Me start up My own blog site "Eddie's Railfan Page", in June Cheryl and Myself became Husband and Wife. My wife is very supportive of My railfan interests and actually enjoys trains. (Yes!) In August, I bought My first digital camera, and in December -Eddie's Railfan Page became a Yahoo groups page too. It has been a trully great year for this old railfan. My interest has been revived and it's great to be back!
Although many things have happened in recent years, such as My favorite 1980's railroads being swallowed up in corporate mergers, or the many security concerns after the September 11th 2001 Terrorist Attacks on our Nation... I am still a railfan preserving local history.

Thank You for supporting My railfan blog site in 2006.

Rock Island relic. Franklin Park Illinois USA. December 2006.

The Rock Island Lives!
Well...at least in unrepainted form anyway.
I photographed this pleasant surprise rolling through town on an eastbound Canadian Pacific freight train in December 2006.
The Chicago,Rock Island & Pacific Railroad was very bankrupt and went out of business in the year of 1980. This was their "Last" color scheme, wich hails from the mid 1970's.

Eastbound BNSF light engine movement. Hodgkins Illinois USA. May 2006.

I took this late day photo after work one day in May of 2006. This view is looking west from the recently erected River Road bypass bridge in suburban Hodgkins Illinois. A quartet of locomotives in the Orange BNSF color scheme, has just left the former Santa Fe yard in nearby Willow Springs Illinois.

Northbound Canadian National train on IHB trackage. Bridgeview Illinois USA. May 2006.

A northbound Canadian National Railroad auto rack train, was spotted traveling north through suburban Bridgeview Illinois one morning in May of 2006. This train is traveling over the Indianna Harbor Belt Railroad mainline to Schiller Park Illinois USA.

Inbound Metra commuter train. Union Pacific Railroad's "West Line" (Ex C,& NW) Chicago Illinois USA. April 2006.

An eastbound Metra express commuter train, is seen racing to downtown Chicago Illinois on the Union Pacific Railroad "West Line". Prior to the 1998 Merger and acquisition by the Union Pacific Railroad, this was the railroad formerly known as
The Chicago & NorthWestern.

Belt Railway of Chicago EMD roadswitcher at work. Clearing Yard. Bedford Park Illinois USA. September 2006.

A Belt Railway of Chicago EMD GP 38 -2 was seen working the North entrance to the Belt Railway of Chicago's headquarters on Central Avenue. This was a nice ending to a good day at work for Myself. Clearing Yard was on the way to My parents house, that I was visiting after work.
