Conrail industrial switching local at work. Chicago Illinois USA. October 1983.
I took this photo looking north from the Grand Trunk Western Railroad embankment at Elsdon Yard. A Conrail industrial switching local is seen slowly shoving a cut of cars, on the light railed industrial spur trackage at West 48th Street about 4 blocks west of South Kedzie Avenue. The factorys are still there today, but this branchline serving them was abandoned and later dismantled around 1986.
Conrail itself became a fallen flag railroad in the year of 1999, after being divided up through merger between the CSX Transportation Company and the Norfolk Southern Railroad
