Rondout Tower and Junction. Rondout Illinois. Early September 2009.

A very rare sight in todays world of Chicago railroading, is a manned interlocking tower at any busy railroad junction. Once very common, most of these interlocking traffic control junction towers had disppeared during the 1990's due to inovations like Satelite communications and GPS technology. The old steam era former Milwaukee Road interlocking tower is still standing today at Rondout Junction in far north suburban Rondout Illinois near the town of Libertyville Illinois. It guards the crosstrack juction of succesor railroads Canadian Pacific and the Canadian National ex Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railroad line to nearby Waukeegan Illinois.
