I arrived on location for some Saturday afternoon railfan photography, in January of 1987 after a heavy morning snowfall had stopped falling.
We are on location at Hayford Junction, on Chicago's southwest side. We are looking west toward the south Pulaski Road overpass bridge, on the east end of the Belt Railway of Chicago's Clearing Yard. A track maintenance crew is busy shoveling out a track switch, while an eastbound Norfolk Southern Railroad freight train is passing them after recieving clearance.
This is an example of how railroads are operating constantly 24 hours a day -7 days a week in any kind of weather condition. Although the snowstorm had passed, there was still a lot of clean up.
