Conrail switching local arriving at an industrial district. Chicago Illinois USA. October 1983.

I took this photo, way back in early October of 1983 on Chicago's southwest side. I had just gotten word via the railfan grapevine, that the adjacent Grand trunk Western Elsdon Yard to the left of the photo would soon be closing. I visited the Elsdon Yard site on believe it or not, the last week of operation. ( What timing!)
This view was taken looking west, along the north embankment of the GTW Elsdon Yard east of South Lawndale Avenue. The industrial branchline that serviced the factory sidings along West 48th Place, was also in it's final years of operation, and would see the rails removed in two to three years pending construction of the CTA Orange line to Midway Airport. The Conrail industrial switching local had just arrived, and was in the process of backing down the embankment, to pick up and deliver boxcars on the various factory spur sidings.

Good morning Jimmy!
Thank You for discovering My blog site. I actually do have a couple of photos of this EMD switcher and transfer caboose at Brighton Junction at Archer and Western during January of 1988.

Do You have any photos as well?

Thank You.
Eddie.

The longest track in the Corwith Yard could only hold 100 1960's era cars, 40' & 50' so assembling a long train required a rear end double crossing Archer with the caboose and rear end using the IHB stockyards line pictured here. Before radios we used fusees and passed signs from the tops of the cars.
