Northbound Canadian National transfer train. Franklin Park Illinois USA. June 2007.

The traffic is light on West Grand Avenue, as a northbound Canadian National Railroad heavy transfer train, crosses over the soon to be completed Grand Avenue Underpass in northwest suburban Franklin Park Illinois. The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad line with it's numerous transfer and run through trains, had caused numerous traffic jams on Grand Avenue for many years. On Labor Day Weekend of 2007, the bridge had it's official Dedication Ceremony.

This is an amazing sight, considering the untold hours I spent stuck at this location when it was a grade crossing. Although I was aware this overpass was in the works (it had been talked about forever) I stopped frequenting the area in late 1999.

As part of this work, I'm told a couple of the tracks connecting the IHB, WC and ex-MILW that snaked through the nearby area have been eliminated or straightened. Those tracks were kinda of cool, the way they twisted and turned right by the local businesses and houses. These were no small industrial spurs, either. I saw lots of heavy-duty power and long trains creeping along. But I'm sure the people of the area are also happy for the change.
