I took this photo on Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood, in early October of 1983. Seen here on West 51st Street just east of South Lawndale Avenue, is the soon to be demolished 1888 vintage Elsdon depot. The old steam era Grand Trunk Western Elsdon Yard, was in it's very last week of operation. By the time of this photo, most of the yard trackage was already empty, and the old roundhouse at West 49th Street and South Kedzie Avenue, was already servicing it's last diesel locomotives. The depot was demolished in early December of 1983, and the roundhouse in approximately Febuary of 1987. This area is now going through a period of urban redevelopment, with new condominium style housing being built on the old yard site.

That was a lovely looking victorian era train station. Too bad it's gone.
