Southbound Amtrak Hiawatha train departing Glenview station. Glenview Illinois USA. Early November 2007.
I took this photo at the north suburban Glenview Illinois Amtrak / Metra commuter rail station. After all of the passengers have boarded and disembarked from the regional Amtrak Hiawatha train enroute to Chicago from Milwaukee Wisconsin, this train will begin the final leg of it's journey to Chicago Union Station.
Northbound trips from Chicago to Milwaukee have the locomotive leading. While the southbound trips to Chicago are led by a rebuilt and de engined 1970's era EMD model F-40PH that has been converted to a baggage car with a control cab and headlights.
This operates just like the commuter cab coach cars on Chicago's Metra commuter rail system. It is cost effective as it saves time in terminals avoiding locomotive run around moves.
