Rare photograph of RTA Bi leval commuter train at the South Shore / Randolph Street station. Chicago Illinois USA. April 1984.

This is the site known today as "Milenium Park". In the year of 1984, this was the old Randolph Street station in downtown Chicago near the lakefront. This below ground -open air terminal served trains from the Chicago, Southshore and South Bend Railroad, and the Illinois Central electric commuter train lines. This scene was photographed in April of 1984, and apparently the old Southshore line is experiencing a shortage of equipment. The old 1920's vintage orange heavyweight electric M.U coaches were finally retired the year before, and the new 1980's vintage cars from Japan, were still arriving. The Southshore was short of equipment, and was borrowing diesel powered bi leval commuter trains from the newly formed Metra commuter rail agency. Seen to the right is a bi leval Metra train in RTA markings, sharing platform space with the new cars from Japan on the left.
