I took this photo Monday after work this week. Seen here heading southbound on the Belt Railway of Chicago, is a Canadian Pacific transfer freight train, approaching the Canadian National Railroad's former Illinois Central crosstracks at Hawthorne Junction. I was standing just west of the crosstracks, to get the best lighting advantage from the late day sunshine for photography. Hawthorne Junction is located at the Chicago city limits, just a few blocks east of the west suburban Village of Cicero Illinois. Most of the trains through here are slow transfer freight trains to and from Clearing Yard in Bedford Park, as well as Glen Yard and Corwith Yard interchange runs. The former Illinois central Iowa Division mainline features numerous locals and occasional transfer trains. There is also some degree of switching locals serving online industries on the Belt Railway of Chicago's north -south line.Thursday, June 28, 2007
