Railroad relics from past decades can sometimes appear in the last places You would ever think of finding them.
On Saturday, October 28th 1989, I rode aboard the Chicago & NorthWestern RR / Metra EMD E-8 Retirement Last Run fantrip from Chicago to Harvard Illinois. I spotted this old maroon and yellow railroad caboose from the now defunt and long gone Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad.
The caboose was adjacent to our second photo runby location, at a grain facility in Richfield Illinois. Not all railroad antiques are in parks or museums, some like this one are privately owned. The Rock Island went out of business due to bankruptcy and liquidation in March of the year of 1980. Several 1920's era Rock Island commuter coaches have been preserved today.
