Eastbound Belt Railway of Chicago transfer train departing Clearing Yard. Chicago Illinois USA. January 1987.

Eastbound Belt Railway of Chicago transfer train leaving Clearing Yard. Photographed at Hayford Junction. Chicago Illinois. January 1987.

I took this photo after a heavy all morning lake effect snow storm piled snow deep all over Chicago one afternoon, in January of 1987. The snow had just stopped less than an hour before I showed up for some railfanning at Hayford Junction.

Seen here is an eastbound Belt Railway of Chicago transfer freight train, being pulled behind two 1960's era ALCO Century series heavy road switchers.

I'll be darned it ther isn't some faint smoke coming from the stack of the caboose! There's someone in there, keeping warm. It's really too bad so many aspects of railroading like this are just gone forever.

Thanks Anthony!
This was always one of My personal favorites. Bad as the weather was that day, it was indeed a great opportunity to photograph scenes of Chicago winter railroading like this.

Nothing like standing in snow up to Your shins with a camera in hand. I had fun taking this one.

Thanks.
