Industrial Brownhoist railroad steam crane. The Hesston Steam Museum. Hesston Indiana.

I purchased this black and white picture postcard in the gift shop at the Hesston Steam Museum in northwest Indiana near the Michigan State line close to New Buffalo Michigan.

One of the more unique operating displays that is fired up occasionally, is this early 1900's era coal fired Industrial Brownhoist Company self propelled railroad steam crane. It is used by the museum's own demonstration steam powered saw mill.

The Hesston steam crane was not built by Industrial Brownhoist but by Browning, an intirely different company. It was built for the US Navy in 1943.

They typically achieve this by using a drum or lift wheel that has either a rope or chain wrapped around it.
