Preserved Oregon Lumber Company 1927 built Lima Shay locomotive. The Hesston Steam Museum. Hesston Indiana USA.
I bought this black and white photo in the gift shop at the Hesston Steam Museum.
This unique industrial steam locomotive type known as a "Shay" locomotive, was built by the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima Ohio in 1927 for the New Mexico Lumber Company. It was later sold to The Oregon Lumber Company. After retirement, it briefly operated during the early 1960's on what was then the "Dual track guage" (3 foot and Standard) Black Hills Central in Keystone South Dakota. The Black Hills Central ceased narrow guage operations early on, and this 3 foot guage logging locomotive came to Hesston Indiana in the year of 1970. The right side of the locomotive's tender is lettered for the original owner New Mexico Lumber Company, while the left side is lettered for the later owner Oregon Lumber Company.
This is one of the larger trains that operate at the Hesston Steam Museum.
