I took this photo on a bitterly cold morning in December of 2007. We are looking southwest from West 31st street near South Homan Avenue in Chicago's little Village neighborhood. Seen here just west of Washburne Trade School, is the former Santa Fe Illinois Northern branch, operated since 2000 by DRS Rail Services.From 1972 after buying out the former Illinois Northern Railroad ( an A,T,& S,F Subsidiary), untill the year of 2000, this line featured Monday to Friday service from Corwith Yard to western Avenue. Today the line only operates between the BNSF Corwith Yard, to the New End of Track approximately 70 Feet east of South Spaulding Avenue. There are only One or Two customers left on this line, and are switched only "As Needed" by this DRS Rail Services EMD Switcher parked inside a chain link fence south of West 31st Street.
Todays I.N Branch is only a shadow of it's former self.
