I took this photo one bitterly cold Chicago winter morning, in early January of 2008. A minor tank car derailment had taken place at the Canadian National Railroad's former Illinois Central Crawford Yard just east of Hawthorne Junction. In past years, railroads were largely responsible for clearing their own derailment and wreck sites using available "In House" equipment from the Maintenance of Way department. For the last 25 years or so, a nationawide firm known as Hulcher Rail services has been providing contract rail clean up services to numerous railroad companys, thus taking a heavy burden away from their daily rail operations.
