Big changes were in the works for the Elsdon community on the southwest side of Chicago in the early 1980's. My family frequently bought a local neighborhood newspaper called "The Southwest News herald" back then.
This article appeared in Febuary of 1983, announcing that the old Jakter Hotel at the intersection of West 47th street and South Kedzie Avenue, would soon be demolished.
This would actually be My "First" attempt at photographing and documenting something for historical posterity purposes. It wasn't much longer after this that I would photographically record such historic and long gone places like, The old Grand Trunk Western Elsdon depot on West 51st Street, Marzano's Clearing Bowl ( a few inside shots) Irv's Golf Range in Bedford Park, NorthWestern Station, The GTW Elsdon Roundhouse, The original Mount Pindos restaurant
and the old Ford City sign on South Pulaski road.
