I took this photo in December of 1984. This was the former GTW Elsdon Roundhouse on Chicago's southwest side at West 49th Street and South Kedzie Avenue. This is a rare backside view of the 1914 built steam era brick roundhouse and turntable. This facility was abandoned in October of 1983 upon the closing of Elsdon Yard. For a few years afterward untill September of 1986, GTW locomotives were staged on the curve just east of South Lawndale Avenue along West 51st Street.

The GTW Elsdon roundhouse was demolished in the year of 1987, and is now the site of a retail strip mall alongside the CTA Kedzie Avenue orange line rapid transit station. This is one of a few recorded last looks I photographed here.
