Southbound Indianna Harbor Belt freight train at 31st Street. March 1990.

A chilly but crystal clear sunday afternoon in march of 1990, is spent photographing trains on location with 2 friends. We are just south of 31st Street. This location in the western suburbs is on the Brookfield / La Grange border just west of Chicago Illinois. This photo location is between 1st Avenue (Rt 171) and La Grange Road.
(Rt 12-45) The Indianna Harbor Belt railroad's north / south mainline goes through here.

In the 1960's delivering a train from the IHB to CB&Q required pulling north of the Q underpass and shoving the 100 car trains onto five short tracks of the Congress Park yard around a curve and up hill with no radios we would stop the train by opening the lead angle cock of the moving cars.

Wow tlee!
That really sounded dangerous by todays standards. I imagine that it must have been a brave and calculated challenge during night operations or even in bad weather.

I am glad that You lived to tell us about it today.

By the way, It is great having You aboard as You are a valuable source of reference input.

Thank You.
Eddie.
