View looking west from the Daley College pedestrian overpass. Chicago Illinois. Late September 1982.

Hi everyone!

Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page, from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.

I took this photograph way back in late September of 1982. At this time, I was taking up an evening adult education 35mm photography course at Chicago's Richard J. Daley College, located just east of the Ford City Shopping Center Mall.

This view is facing west, from on top of the Daley College pedestrian overpass bridge, which spans West 76th Street just west of South Pulaski Road. This bridge links the parking lot, with the Daley College building.

The tall building to the left of the photograph in the background near the setting sun, is the Ford City Apartments building.

Thanks.

Athearn GTW 40 foot double door box car.

I took this photograph recently, at the Oak Park Society of Model Engineers, H.O Scale Model Railroad Club.

The former Grand Trunk Western, was always one of my all time favorite Chicago railroads I had grown up with.

Deen here is my recently purchased Athearn model of a GTW 40 foot double door box car.

The GT logo to the right of the double doors, was created by the GTW parent company Canadian National Railroad in 1961, and replaced the old steam era Canadian National and Grand Trunk western maple leaf logo.

Eastbound Canadian Pacific night freight. Franklin Park Illinois. Wednsday, August 29th, 2012.

I took this photo after work this past Wednsday night, atthe Franklin Park Metra commuter rail station.

With my camera shutter speed working a little slow under low lighting conditions, this pacing shot of an eastbound Canadian Pacific transfer train, looks like it is actually moving much faster than it really was.

Believe me...this train was moving at a crawl.

Rio Grande Scenic Railroad

I found this video on You Tube.

One of America's newer steam tourist railroads today, is the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad operating out of Alamosa Colorado.

If locomotive # 18 looks familiar to you, it should. Rio Grande Scenic Railroad Alco 2-8-0 steam locomotive # 18, pulled passenger trains for many years at the Grand canyon Railroad in Williams Arizona. For much of it's operating service life, it pulled iron ore trains on the Lake Superior & Ishpheming Railroad in Michigan's upper peninsula.

Night time at the Franklin Park Metra commuter rail station. Franklin Park Illinois. Wednsday, August 29th, 2012.

I took this photograph after work last night.

A fun and very active location to go to for some nocturnal railfan photography after the sun has set, is the Franklin Park Illinois Metra commuter rail station.

Here one can find many Metra local commuter trains, as well as a large number of freight trains going to or coming from the nearby Canadian Pacific Bensenville Yard.

This is also a great place to visit with your camera during daylight hours on any given day.

Thanks.

I photographed this digital live sound video, during a September 2010 visit to the Hesston Steam Museum in northwest Indiana near Michigan City. www.hesston.org

We are riding aboard the 2 foot guage train through the woods, behind a 1930's era German meter guage 0-8-0 steam locomotive. The Hesston Steam Museum, is a fun and very family oriented  tourist railroad attraction, located a few miles south of New Buffalo Michigan.

Chicago Fire Department Ford ambulance C 102 heading to nearby Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital on Talcott Avenue. Chicago Illinois. Late August 2012.

I took this photograph on my way back to work after my lunchtime yesterday.

With sirens wailing and bright flashing warning lights lit up, this fast moving Chicago Fire Department Ford ambulance # C 102, heads to the nearby Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital on North Talcott Avenue.

Grand Trunk Western Railroad 2-8-2 steam locomotive # 3747 at Elsdon Yard. Chicago Illinois. August 1956.

One of my all time favorite southwest side Chicago railfan locations I had discovered while attending Curie High School from 1977 to 1981, was the now long gone Grand Trunk Western Railroad's Elsdon Yard. This old steam era freight train yard, retained it's rustic steam era feel complete with a 1914 built roundhouse at South Kedzie Avenue, two crossing gate operators towers at West 51st and West 55th Streets, and an old fashioned wooden two story train station built in 1888 on West 51st Street just east of South Lawndale Avenue. Sadly the GTW closed Elsdon Yard in October of 1983, and eventually demolished the old steam era structures. The GTW Elsdon Yard site is slowly developing today for other real estate uses near West 51st Street between South Lawndale and South St. louis Avenues.

Back when Elsdon was alive and well in much better times, I often wondered how this place must have looked like back in the steam era. The internet has been great for helping me to satisfy this longtime curiosity of mine, with great reference photographs.

I found this classic Grand Trunk Western Railroad steam locomotive powered freight train photograph at my Link page Yesteryear Depot.Com, located to the right of your computer screen at www.yesteryeardepot.com

Railfan photographer Harold Olson, photographed Grand Trunk Western 2-8-2 steam locomotive # 3747 on the head end of a freight train preparing to depart from Elsdon Yard, in August of 1956.

The Grand Trunk Western was one of the last railroads in North America, to utilize steam locomotives in daily railroad operations, until 1961 when most railroads had dieselized completely by then. This si proboubly why I always liked the GTW so much for many years as I did.

Westbound CTA Skokie Swift train. Skokie IL. Aug 2008.

I photographed this digital live sound video one morning during my lunch break, back in August of 2008.

Twilight time at the 25th Avenue railroad crossing. Franklin Park Illinois. Wednsday, August 29th, 2012.

I took this photograph last night on my way home from work.

I enjoy taking those occasional silhouetted twilight mood shots with my camera whenever I get the chance to do so.

Sunset and twilight are definately two of my favorite times of the evening to cast a photographic magic spell, as another day comes to an end. It is definately one of the more creative styles of photography I have come to enjoy over the years.

I took this photograph on location, at the 25th Avenue railroad crossing, in northwest suburban Franklin Park Illinois.

We are between train times, but not for much longer as the sun is now setting below the horizon in the western sky, and the village street lamps are now turning on for the upcoming night.

This was a nice way to end my long workday, with some twilight railfanning at the Franklin Park Metra commuter rail station at nightfall.

Illinois Central Gulf ex G,M & O EMD GP 35 # 630. Louisville Kentucky. May 5th, 1979.

I found this wonderful photograph from the former Illinois Central Gulf Railroad at my link page Yesteryear Depot.Com, located to the right of your computer screen at www.yesteryeardepot.com

Railfan photographer Doug Edwards, photographed Illinois Central Gulf EMD GP 35 # 630, which was acquired from the former Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad through merger in 1972, and apparently wasn't repainted yet by 1979.  I lived approximately one mile north of the paralel Illinois Central Gulf's ex Illinois Central RR Iowa Division Mainline, and the former Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad mainline on the near southwest side of Chicago during the 1970's and 80's era. I fondly remember the sometimes mixed up locomotive head end consists, with various flavors of current and predecessor color schemes on the Illinois Central Gulf  freight trains. It was a colorful period for Chicago railfanning back in those days.

Johnny A - Witchita Lineman

Hi everyone!
This is Eddie K, your host and photographer here at Eddie's Railfan Page.

Aside from my obvious trains and transportation interest, music and happy memories also play an important part here as well at my blogsite.

One of my all time favorite songs from when I was a kid growing up in Chicago during the late 1960's, was a song the songwriter Jimmy Webb wrote that country singer Glen Campbell had a huge hit with entitled "Wichita Lineman".

In recent years, this song had a few cover versions released by artists like James Taylor and instrumental guitar players such as Johnny A.

Johnny A was introduced to me via a compact disc recording by my good friend and fellow Chicago railfan Anthony C last last year, while we were out driving around on a photo outing whith our cameras.

I especially enjoyed the smooth and easy listening instrumental version of this song by Johnny A, and felt that it deserved a spot today here at Eddie's Railfan Page.

Baltimore Transit Company Pulman trolleybus. Baltimore Maryland USA. Late 1940's era.

I found this color photograph from the Baltimore Transit Company at My Link page Tom's Trolleybus Pictures, located to the right of your computer screen at www.trolleybuses.net

A popular form of public transportation vehicle that operated on many North American city transit companies several decades ago, was the rubber tired electric powered trolleybus. Many citties in the United States, and Canada, operated these during the transition from electric streetcars to motorbuses.

Cost effective when introduced, these buses utilized the same overhead wires and electrical sub stations already in use by the electric streetcar routes, but required no track maintenance.

Eventually, the high cost of overhead wire maintenance, limited operating flexibility and sometimes costly specialized repairs, would find many of the citties using these, converting to cost effective diesel powered transit buses.

The Baltimore Transit Company operated electric trolleybuses from 1922 to 1931, and later brought them back in 1938, and operated them once again until phased out for good in 1959.

The Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad's Illinois Northern branchline switching local. Chicago Illinois. March 1986.

I took this photograph in my old neighborhood I had grown up in, way back in March of 1986.

The former Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad had served the industries in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood Monday through Friday, along the approximately 6 mile I.N or Illinois Northern branchline.

The Santa Fe I.N's local rebuilt EMD GP 7 roadswitcher, is photographed at the local Stewart Oil Company spur just east of South Kedzie Avenue near West 28th Street.

The I.N branchline has been abandoned by the succesor railroad BNSF today, due to hard economic times and a major lack of online traffic.

A couple of Chicago's lost eateries of the past.

These two photographs were E Mailed to me by a Mr Tom Fueh, whom I met doing one of my local  public speaking presentations this past February, at the Hillside Illinois Public Library.

The photograph at the top, is of a place that litterally put northwest suburban Melrose Park Illinois on the map. Seen here along what appears to be the south side of West North Avenue / Illinois Rt # 64, is the legendary "Skip's Fiesta Drive In Restaurant". During the 1950's and 60's era, the greater Chicagoland area once had a large abundance of roadside hamburger stands, that featured curbside or "Car Hop" service.
Skip's was one of those, and was a local hang out for many hot rod and custom car enthusiasts.

I do not know when Skip's had closed. I am willing to say around possibly 1970, unless some of the readers at Eddie's Railfan Page might know otherwise.

The 2nd photograph is from a place I actually used to go to whith my family during the mid 1970's.

Seen here at the northwest corner of West Irving Park Road and North Pulaski Road, is the famous "Buffalo Ice Cream Parlor".  This place featured delicious home made ice cream fountain creations, as well as sit down dining. One room featured old fashioned 1920's era wooden booths and furnishings, while another room featured 1950's era booths and tables whith more modern furnishings.

Buffalo Ice Cream burned to the ground in 1979, and is now the site of a local Shell convenience gasoline station. The family who owned Buffalo Ice Cream ,later opened a new Bufalo Ice Cream Restaurant, at the northeast corner of Lake Cook Road and Arlington Heights Road, in north suburban Buffalo Grove Illinois.

Happy memories!

Thanks Tom.

Chicago's Kiddieland Amusement Park neon sign being serviced. Melrose Park Illinois. August 2009.

Hi everyone!

Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page, from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.

A popular topic here at my blogsite, is the former Kiddieland Amusement Park that existed for 81 years from 1928 until 2009, in near northwest suburban Melrose Park Illinois.

I took this photograph during Kiddieland's last season of operation, back in August of 2009.

Time was running out for Kiddieland, as it was announced recently back in July of 2009, that the park was to close in September of 2009, and redeveloped in to a Costco wholesale warehouse club store.

Although the end was near, a maintenance crew whith a Genie crane, performs lighting maintenance on the huge roadise neon sign at the northwest corner of North and First Avenues, in Melrose Park.

A portion of the former Kiddieland Amusement Park sign has been salvaged, and is now on display outside at the Melrose Park Public Library, at 801 Broadway Street in Melrose Park Illinois.

I will be hosting a multi media musical photo slideshow, video and lecture presentation at the Melrose Park Public Library on Saturday September 29th from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM, spotlighting "Chicago's Historic Amusement Parks Of The Past".

Wes Montgomery - Windy

Hi everyone!

This is Eddie K, your host and photographer here at Eddie's Railfan Page.

Aside from my obvious interest in trains and transportation subjects, I am also an avid fan of music.

In recent times, I kind of got tired of listening to the same old music and songs all the time, and actually began enjoying jazz music more and more. I have always enjoyed jazz music all of my life, but recently began to discover some of the all time greats of jazz.

One of my favorites I discovered recently from my own childhood in the 1960's, was the late great Wes Montgomery. Wes Montgomery was born in Indianapolis Indiana in 1923, and became a "Self Taught" and very acomplished jazz guitarist by the age of nineteen.

After being discovered, He toured whith Lionel Hampton during the 1950's, and eventually made it big during the 1960's along whith fellow jazz greats Dave Brubeck, Vince Gueraldi, Herb Alpert
and Ramsy Lewis.

Aside from his recordings of jazz standards, Wes Montgomery also did cover versions of songs from the popular groups of the time such as The Beatles, The Mamas and the Papas and The Association.

Sadly, Wes Montgomery passed away at the age of 45 from a massive heart attack in 1968 at the height of his career in jazz music.

In this video, Wes Montgomery performs his rendition of The Associations big 1967 hit song "Windy", on the Hollywood Palace television show.

Falco's Pizzeria. Located at the intersection of South Archer andCalifornia Avenues in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood. ChicagoIllinois. Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010.

Hi everyone!

Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page, from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.

This photograph was taken during a group get together whith a few friends of mine
back in June of 2010, at a favorite Chicago pizza place known as Falco's.

I grew up on the near southwest side of Chicago during the 1960's, 70's and 80's.

One popular local icon associated with the south and southwest sides of Chicago, are the great abundance of neighborhood pizzeria restaurants.

A popular one for many years, is Falco's Pizzeria located at the intersection of South Archer and California Avenues in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood.

The pizza is very god here, the aroma is heavenly, and the prices are very cost effective.

I took this photograph during a July 2009 visit to the Illinois Railway Museum, located in the town of Union Illinois. www.irm.org

You never know what kind of photo opportunities you may find on any given museum visit.

I captured this behind the scenes view of the museum's overhead trolley wire maintenance on the mainline, utilizing a former Commonwealth Edison Company steeple cab electric locomotive, and a former maintenance line car from the former Chicago, North Shore And Milwaukee Railroad.

The museum's on board volunteer crew members, are actually recreating a scene from America's electric interurban railroading past.

Thanks.

A former GTW locomotive at work in the Canadian National Crawford Yard.Chicago Illinois. Early October 2007.

I took this photograph, back in early October of 2007. A former Grand Trunk Western EMD roadswitcher acquired through merger by the Canadian National Railroad in 1999, is busy working the former Illinois Central Railroad's Crawford Yard just east of Cicero Illinois.

This modest freight train yard was located at Approximately West 33rd Street at South Kostner Avenue on the near southwest side of Chicago Illinois.

The Canadian National Railroad closed Crawford Yard in 2011 and removed the tracks.
Seen in the background, is the Commonwelath Edison Company Crawford Generating Station.

The original Dove's Ice Cream and Candies. (Gone.) Chicago Illinois. September 1987.

One of my favorite memories from the southwest side of Chicago during the 1980's, were those occasional Saturday evening visits to the original Dove's Candies at West 60th Street and South Pulaski Road in Chicago's Westlawn neighborhood.

The ice cream was homemade and very flavorful. I can still recall those "Big" ice cream bars that they sold back then for like just a dollar each. There was nothing like enjoying an ice cream sundae in one of those booths whith family members or friends here whenever possible.

Today, this is now the site of a Re Max Real Estate office location.

Thanks.
