Village of Berwyn city limits border signs on West 16th Street. Berwyn Illinois. April 1989.

Hi everyone!

Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page, from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.

During the late 1980's begining in 1987, I was an avid bicyclist. Monday through Friday, I would ride two miles to work and back, but on the weekends I would enjoy a day of local"Cross Country" style biking with plenty of fresh air, sunshine and photo opportunities.

I took this photograph during an April 1989 bicycle ride, through west suburban Berwyn Illinois.

Seen here on West 16th Street just west of the border of neighboring Cicero Illinois, are these local telephone pole mounted Berwyn city limits border signs, near the intersection of South Lombard Avenue.

Notice the former Berwyn mayor Joseph J. Lanzillotti's name on the sign.

Mayor Lanzillotti was also a cameo appearance guest a time or two, on the WFLD TV Channel 32 television show "The Son Of Svengoolie" during the 1980's. This popular local Chicago television horror movie and comedy show, was hosted by Rich Koz who made a lot of jokes about Berwyn on the show.

BER-WYN!?

Thanks.

Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad EMD NW-2 # 8734 and a caboose in Hammond Indiana. March 1976.

I found this photograph at my link page Fallen Flags.Org, wich is located to the right of your computer screen at www.rr-fallenflags.org

I have been a big fan of the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad since the forst time I saw one of their switching locals pass behind Curie High School on their now long gone "Stockyards" branch, way back in 1977.

Although this photograph was taken at Hammond Indiana, this is how I remember the stockyards branchline trains looking like almost daily, passing behind my old high school in Chicago from 1977 to 1981.

Often it looked like a forgotten remnant of the 1950's era New York Central Railroad lost in time.

Thanks.

Hamburger Heaven Drive In. Elmhurst Illinois. April 1989.

I took this photograph on a lovely springtime afternoon, way back in April of 1989.

Seen here, is the seasonal Hamburger Heaven 1950's era drive in take out stand.

This classic American roadside drive in eatery, is located on the southeast corner of North Avenue and York Street, in the town of Elmhurst Illinois. This place has no inside seating or dining room of any kind, but has a convenient walk up window, and picnic benches outside.

Star Trekkin

Hi everyone!
This is Eddie K, Your host and photographer here at Eddie's Railfan Page.

In the spirit of "Fun", I thought that it would be a good time to have a laugh. Here is a classic
"Novelty record" for all the Star Trek fans who beamed aboard Eddie's Railfan Page today.

Here is a song entitled "Star Trekkin", from a group known as "The Firm."

H.O Scale steam powered freight train crossing the Missisippi River lift bridge.

I took this photo a few weeks ago, at the Oak Park Society of Model Engineers,H.O Scale Model Railroad Club.

My good running used second hand Athearn U.S.R.A 2-8-2 Mikado steam locomotive, is viewed passing through the model of a lift bridge on the Missisippi River, with a freight train in tow.

Unfortunately...I seem to have lost the front mounted Bell hanger bracket. If anyone knows where I can find an Athearn parts source for thispiece, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

The Nabisco factory at South Kedzie Avenue and West 73rd Street. Chicago Illinois. May 1989.

I took this photograph way back in May of 1989.

Without a doubt, one of the most distinctive landmarks on the southwest side of Chicago, has to be the Nabisco factory at West 73rd Street and South Kedzie Avenue.

Located just a few blocks south of Chicago's Marquette Park, this landmark factory building fills the air with the a aroma of fresh baking cookies.

I took this photograph last week Wednsday night, at the Oak Park Society of Model Engineers,H.O Scale Model Railroad Club.

I enjoy modeling the freight trains and railroads I grew up seeing in Chicago from the 1960's and 70's era. The former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe was indeed one of my local Chicago area railroads I enjoyed since I was a kid.

With an appropriate for the period cut of freight cars coupled aboard, My late 1960's / early 1970's era Santa Fe freight train, is viewed crossing the Missisippi River lift bridge model on the club layout.

The B-52's - Private Idaho 1980 Video widescreen

While I was attending Curie High School in Chicago during the late 1970's and early 80's. I -
was introduced to an unusual futuristic, new wave, science fiction sounding rock and roll band
known as "The B 52's".

With the female back up vocalists wearing those "Huge" 1960's style womans hair styles, lead
vocalist Fred Schneider doing songs about unusual and sometimes bizzare song subject matter...
this group for me, was actually quite fun and imaginative to listen to whenevr they were playing
on the FM Radio stations.

My first B 52 song I recall ever listening to, was their big underwater deep sea hit "Rock Lobster".

Although sometimes "Strange", their songs are quite light hearted and border on funny Novelty records. This group has definately put a lot of fun and imagination in to what they do.

I was lucky to have had the opportunity to see them in concert during the summer of 2000.
The B 52's also made a cameo appearance in the movie "The Flintstones", which had starred
John Goodman as the famous Hanna Barbera carton character Fred Flintstone.

Here is one of their early hits from 1980 that I had discovered recently entitled "Private Idaho".

Thanks.

Construction of the CTA orange line rapid transit to Midway Airport. Chicago Illinois. Early March 1989.

Old friends reunite at the Chicago Public Library's Clearing Branch. Saturday, January 19th, 2013.

This photograph is an example of some of the wonderful and often unexpected pleasant surprises that can happen when I am hosting a public speaking event.

Just recently on Saturday, January 19th, I was hosting a multi media photo slideshow, video and lecture event about "Chicago's Amusement Parks Of The Past", at the Clearing branch of the Chicago Public Library, located at 6423 West 63rd Place in Chicago.

In this photograph, my good friend and fellow Chicago railfan Anthony C (Right), had the unexpected and absolutely wonderful surprise of seeing his old friend Tim Hadac at the show.

Anthony and Tim used to work together many years ago, at the Southwest News Herald newspaper office on South Kedzie Avenue near West 63rd Street in Chicago.

Anthony is now involved in commercial real estate properties management, while Tim is the managing editor of the Southwest Chicago Post online internet news source.

Many stories were swapped after all these years between the two of them that day.

Inexpensive local neighborhood fast food eateries have always had a following of their own. Seen here along the west side of South Kedzie Avenue at approximately West 77th Street in Chicago's Ashburn neighborhood, is a little place that has been here for many years known as "Don's Hot Dogs".

This little place has been in business here at this location as long as I can remember, at least going back to the mid 1970's era.

The Snowflake Drive In on Ogden Avenue. (Gone) Lyons Illinois. May 1989.

I took this photograph way back in May of 1989.

One of my favorite local Chicago area seasonal soft serve ice cream roadside drive in eatery establishments that I would occasionally stop at many years ago, was non other than the classic 1950's era Snowflake Drive In, which was located at the intersection of Ogden and Lawndale Avenues, in west suburban Lyons Illinois.

Aftter many years of being a "Seasonal" business, a new owner purchased the place during the 1990's, and added a small dining room addition to help this place become a year round business.

At some point within the last ten years, the place was sold and was soon demolished. A Culver's ice cream and hamburger fast food restaurant now occupies the space to the right of this picture. The old concrete slab that the old Snowflake Drive In stood on for many years, is still in evidence here today.

Southbound Belt Railway of Chicago maintenance truck and crewmember. 55th Street Junction. Chicago Illinois. January 2007.

I took this photograph one overcast winter day, back in January of 2007.

I was driving past one of my favorite railfan hangouts from my Curie High School days ( 1977 to 1981), and decided to stop and take a look at the old place.

One of my favorite railfan hangouts I used to enjoy visiting before I actually owned a camera, was a location near Chicago's Midway Airport that was known as 55th Street Junction.

During my high school days, I would sometimes walk here approximately one half mile west of Curie High School after school, and watch a few transfer trains going to and from the Belt Railway of Chicago Clearing Yard. I would often spot trains from the Burlington Northern, The Milwaukee Road, The Soo Line , The Belt Railway of Chicago, and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad.

The Belt Railway of Chicago actually crossed itself here, as their north / south line, crossed their east / west line. The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad's own "Stockyards" branch ran paralel
along the northside of the BRC's east / west branchline.

This Belt Railway of Chicago Hi Rail equipped Ford pick up truck, is viewed passing by the former site of 55th Street Tower, which was demolished in 1990.

55th Street Junction, is still a very busy location today along the Belt Railway of Chicago. Transfer trains roll through here 24-7.

Nothbound BNSF Railway light engine movement. Hawthorne Junction. Chicago / Cicero Illinois. February 2007.

I took this photograph after work one evening around sunset, back in February of 2007.

The entire Chicago area was in the middle of a severe deep freeze condition, that featured several days of single digit temperatures, several nights of below zero temperatures, windchill advisories, and water main pipes bursting below Chicago's many city streets.

It was actually 8 degrees above zero with a sharp wind blowing in out of the west when I took this photograph of a light engine movement passing through Hawthorne Junction at the Chicago city limits border.

Two BNSF Railway diesel electric locomotives, are viewed heading northbound over the Belt Railway of Chicago tracks, and are returning to the nearby BNSF Railway Clyde Yard in the immediate neighboring west suburban town of Cicero Illinois.

I froze taking this photograph, but it was well worth it all that evening. No regrets for this Chicago area railfan. No way!

Thanks.

Construction of the Chicago Transit Authority's orange line rapid transit to Midway Airport. Chicago Illinois. April 1989.

I took this now historic photograph, way back in April of 1989.

Seen here at the South Keeler Avenue railroad crossing near West 52nd Street in Chicago's Archer Heights neighborhood, is much construction activity that was recently started.

The Chicago Transit Authority was now officially constructing the long since proposed "Southwest Elevated Project" to Midway Airport. The adjacent Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad's own Stockyard's branch which was located to the left of the photograph, had just recently had it's track removed. The CTA rapid transit line would utilize part of the IHB Stockyards branch right of way, which for many years operated parralel to the single track Belt Railway of Chicago owned branch line to the right of the photograph.

During the year of 1993, the Chicago Transit Authority began a system pf color coding their rapid transit routes. This line would officially open in November of 1993 as the CTA orange line rapid transit to Midway Airport.

Fellow paratransit driver Dave Baskerville waiting at the CTA RosemontTransfer Station. Rosemont Illinois. January 2013.

Hi everyone!

This is Eddie K, your host and photographer here at Eddie's Railfan Page.

Next month, February 2013, I will be celebrating my 5th anniversary of employment as a local Chicago area paratransit driver with First Transit. This has definately been a rewarding career choice for myself, as this particular job has a lot going for it for as well.

One of the nicest unofficial on the job "Perks" I have come to know, is the opportunity to work alongside some of the nicest fellow paratransit drivers you would ever like to meet at my garage facility in Glenview Illinois.

Seen here waiting at the CTA / Pace Rosemont Transfer Station along River Road in northwest suburban Rosemont Illinois, is my good buddy and fellow paratransit driver Dave Baskerville.

Dave was waiting for a passenger transfer pick up from one of the other Pace contracted paratransit bus cmpanies, just as I was too on this cold and windy January evening around sunset, near the end of our shift.

Dave is one of the coolest drivers you could ride along with, or work together with as in my case.
He always greets you with a smile, and loves to joke around with his fellow bus driving buddies. He is always up for a good laugh, and makes it fun to come to work anyday.

Thanks Dave!
welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page buddy.

A Q Straint used for securing wheelchairs aboard a paratransit mini bus.

One of the everyday onboard tools I utilize as a paratransit driver, is this unique steel gadget known as a "Q Straint", which is used to secure and tighten wheelchairs to the floor of my company buses.

The device slips on to and "Locks" to the circular metal base viewed to the left of the Q Straint device. The oval shape object, is the release pin for removing the Q Straint from the floor. To the right, you can see the spring loaded safety belt with a metal hook that attatches to the frame or handles on wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Wintertime in Garden Homes Illinois. January 1990.

The Illinois Central Railroad swing bridge over the Chicago Sanitaryand Ship Canal. Chicago Illinois. Early April 1989.

I took this photograph way back in early April of 1989.

The Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal located on the near southwest side of Chicago, was a man made engineering project that was constructed between 1892 and 1900. This waterway which helped to reverse the flow of the Chicago River away from Lake Michigan, originally featured much commercial ship traffic of the era, thus requiring many lift bridges, swing bridges and draw bridges along the watterway. Tall sailing ships and early steam powered vessels, traveled through these waters. Even the U. Navy traveled through here during World War 2, mostly at night.

Eventually. commercial ships became really huge and supersized. multiple tug boats were soon required to help navigate through these now tight and narrow waterway passeges. By the mid to late 1950's era, shipping traffic had shifted location to Calumet Harbor near Hammond Indiana on the far southeast side of Chicago, and the various drawbridges west of the South Ashland Avenue boat yard in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, were soon decommisioned and made stationary.

Practical smaller sized river tow boats pushing barges, were more suited to the canal's original dimensions, and took over all of today's commercial shipping traffic on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal several years ago.

Seen here to the immediate east of the South Kedzie Avenue bridge, is the former Illinois Central Railroad swing bridge that dates back to the canal's early days.

The South Kedzie Avenue bridge, was also originally a narrow two lane swing bridge dating from the early 1900's, and was used by electric streetcars from the Chicago Surface Lines Route # 52 / Kedzie -California streetcar line (Later CTA after 1947) until May of 1954. CTA electric trolleybuses used the old Kedzie Avenue swing bridge from 1955 until it too was decommisioned and demolished during the year of 1969. Today's bridge at South Kedzie Avenue, is a replacement "Stationary deck model that opened for service in 1970.

May of the old drawbridges from earlier times, are still in place along the Chicago sanitary And Ship Canal today.

Thanks.

Brian Setzer Orchestra - Sleepwalk

Hi everyone!
This is Eddie K, your host and photographer here at ddie's Railfan Page.

One of my all time favorite 1950's era Rock and Roll guitar instrumental standards, was
the big hit song "Sleepwalk", which was originally recorded by the guitar duo of "Santo and Johnny" during the late 1950's.

Seen here circa 1999, is Brian Setzer, the former lead vocalist of the early 1980's rock and roll
band known as "The Stray Cats". In later years, Brian made a unique and very retro sounding
comeback, with a new group he produced now known as "The Brian Setzer Orchestra."

Here is the Brian Setzer orchestra performing a unique and very talented "New" version of
Sleepwalk, with Brian Setzer giving his lead guitar solos all they are worth and then some.

Thanks.

Bringing up the rear of the train, is a former Norfolk & Western Railroad wide vision caboose. This cabose is still wearing the 1971 NW markings from the former Norfolk & Western Railroad. This photo is rare, because cabooses were disappearing from the rear end of many of Chicago's freight trains during the 1980's.

Steam in the Rockies - Eureka & Palisade 4-4-0 #4 on the Durango & Silve...

The corner of West 95th Street and South kedzie Avenue just after the Christmas holiday season had ended. Evergreen Park Illinois. Early January 1988.

One of my favorite towns I have always enjoyed visiting in Chicago's own south suburbs, is Evergreen Park Illinois.

I made many trips by the Chicago Transit Authority Rt # 52A / South Kedzie bus line, as well as on my own 12 speed mountain bike here during the mid to late 1980's.

Every year, the village of Evergreen Park Illinois, used to decorate the intersection of West 95th Street and South Kedzie Avenue with this tethered red overhead lighted Christmas tree display every December.

I took this photograph way back in early January of 1988, just after the Christmas and New Years holidays had ended.

I still enjoy seeing Evergreen Park today whenever I am passing through this town.

Thanks.

Northbound Iowa, Chicago & Eastern transfer train at Hawthorne Junction. Chicago / Cicero Illinois. January 2007.

I took this photograph on a very bitterly cold and windy morning back in January of 2007.

With plenty of bright crystal clear sunshine, sharp winds and single digit temperatures, I photographed this northbound Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad transfer train passing through Hawthorne Junction, along the Chicago city limits at the border of Cicero Illinois.

Glen Campbell - William Tell Overture (From The Donny & Marie Osmond Show)

I spotted this unique and fun music video from country singer and guitarist Glen Campbell on You Tube.

Happy memories are one of the things that fuel the fun and interest here at Eddie's Railfan Page, and I too have a happy memory to go with this musical selection.

In the year of 1977 when I was 15 years old, Glen Campbells hit song "Southern Nights" was released. I myself was a big fan of mainstream country music back then, and I bought the 45 RPM vinyl single record of this not long after it's release. I was pleasantly surprised to see that he performed an guitar solo instrumental recording of the classical music favorite Rossini's the "William Tell Overature", which became known in later years as "The Lone Ranger" radio and television show theme.

Here is Glen Campbell performing the William Tell Overture on the Donny and Marie Osmond TV Show
way back in the 1970's on American prime time television.

Thanks.
