Chicago's famous Giordano's Pizza. Morton Grove Illinois USA. December 2010.

One of My personal favorites amongst the many Chicago Style Pizzeria restaurants in the greater Chicagoland area, is none other than Giordano's.

I discovered Giordano's Pizzeria for the first time, way back in 1979.
Back in thise days, they used to have one below street leval at a southside Chicago location on West 63rd Street just west of South Kedzie Avenue. Thir Chicago Style deep dish and thin crust pizza was always very hearty and savory.

Prior to My discovery of Giordano's Pizzeria in 1979, they had just recently moved from their original location at West 63rd Street and South California Avenue just east of the location I originally dined at.

This is their north suburban Morton Grove Illinois location at the intersection of Austin Avenue and Dempster Street.

Thanks.

The lovely and very scenic Beckwith Road. Morton Grove Illinois USA. December 2010.

Hi everyone!
Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page from the city of Chicago Illinois.

One of the most lovely and scenic roads I have come to know in the greater Chicagoland area, is none other than Beckwith Road in north suburban Morton Grove Illinois. I discovered this road at work in 2008.

With a forest preserve, prairie grasses and trees lining both sides of the road west of Austin Avenue, Beckwith Road is beautiful anytime of the year. Autum is especially lovely here, as it becomes a blaze of seasonal colors.

Thanks.

Chicago Transit Authority 6000 series rapid transit cars on a fantrip. March 1985.

I took this photo during a March 1985 chartered fantrip over the Chicago Transit Authority's rapid transit lines, that was sponsored by the Illinois Railway Museum.

Dubbed "The Snowflake Special" and utilizing the 1950's era 6000 and 550 series lightweight rapid transit cars that were built by the St. Louis Car Company, the chartered train traveled all over the CTA rapid transit system, except for the Skokie Swift line.

Several 6000 and 550 series CTA cars, have since been preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum, and several other tourist trolley museums around North America.

The Chicago Transit Authority bus terminal loop at West 63rd Place and South Kedzie Avenue. Chicago Illinois. December 1985.

Hello everyone!
Welcome aboard the "Bus Day" edition of Eddie's Railfan Page.
This will be the last bus day edition for 2010.

I took this photo way back in December of 1985.
We are at the Chicago Transit Authority's bus terminal loop at West 63rd Place and South Kedzie Avenue, in Chicago's Marquette Park neighborhood on the southwest side of Chicago.

This terminal was very special to Me when I was growing up and used to reside in the city of Chicago.

As a little boy, I would ride the CTA Route # 52 Kedzie / California Avenue elctric trolley bus with My family to this terminal from My old neighborhood during the 1960's.

During the 1970's and 80's...I made many shopping trips to West 63rd Street and South Kedzie Avenue. Sometimes My family and I would go see the movies playing at the now demolished Marquette Theatre, or enjoy a Chicago style deep dish pizza at the nearby and now famous Giordano's Pizzeria.

The bus on the left, is a 1970's era CTA GMC transit bus working the CTA Route # 52 Kedzie / California Avenue line, while the bus on the right is a 1983 Flyer of Canada transit bus assigned to the CTA Route # 52A South Kedzie Avenue line.

Interior view if west Towns bus company # 776. A 1950 General Motors bus. The Midwest Transit Bus Museum. cresthill Illinois. September 2000.

From 2000 until 2002, I was a member of The Midwest Transit Bus Museum, located in the village of Cresthill Illinois near the city of Joliet.

This is an interior view of one of My favorite buses in the museum. Seen here, is an inside view of West Towns Bus Company # 776 built by General Motors in the year of 1950.

For many years, this vintage transit bus hauled daily bus commuters in the western suburban towns of Cicero, Berwyn, Oak Park, Brookfield and La Grange in Chicago's western suburbs.

Southbound CTA 1970's era GMC Fishbowl windshield bus at the intersection of West 111th Street and South Pulaski Road in Chicago's Mount Greenwood neighborhood. Chicago Illinois. December 1986.

I took this photo, way back in December of 1986.

We are facing north at the corner of West 111th Street and South Pulaski Road in Chicago's Mount Greenwood neighborhood.

A southbound Chicago Transit Authority 1970's era GMC fishbowl windshield transit bus that is assigned to the CTA Route # 53A South Pulaski Road line, is viewed preparing to turn east off of South Pulaski Road and head to the nearby terminal at West 111th Street and South Springfield Avenue.

Seen here in north suburban Evanston Illinois, is an International paratransit bus owned by the City Of Evanston Department Of Recreation.

Southbound CTA bus. Chicago Illinois USA. Early March, 2010.

I photographed this digital live sound video in early March of 2010.

Avenue, adjacent to the Metra / Galewood commuter flagstop depot.

Electric powered trolley buses, are a quiet and pollution free transit vechicle.
While it is true that electric trolley buses did not last in North American citties like Chicago Illinois, Los Angeles California, Detroit Michigan, Fort Wayne Indiana or Cleveland Ohio due to various cost cutting economical circumstances involving maintenance and infrastructure issues, some citties like Seatle Washington, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Dayton Ohio, San Francisco California, and Boston Massachusettes kept their systems going. They have even upgraded their electric powered trolley bus networks with new equipment and technology even.

This Boston Mass MBTA example, is viewed at nearby Watertown Massachusettes in 2008.

The Hesston Steam Museum. Hesston Indiana USA. Sunday, September 12th,2010.

I took this up close detail photo during My recent September 2010 visit to The Hesston Steam Museum in northwestern Indiana.

Seen here, is a standard safety sticker applied by many transit bus companies. This was placed along the front steps at the entry doorway of transit buses, to warn passengers to be careful when boarding the bus. This vintage design, dates back to the 1950's and 60's era.

The example seen here, was applied by Chicago's Brookfield Zoo on the runing boards of their open air zoo train coaches. Chicago's Brookfield Zoo operated the 2 foot narrow guage Brookfoeld, Salt Creek & Western Railroad around the outside perimeter of the zoo from 1967 until 1985.

The Brookfield Zoo train was donated to The Hesston Steam Museum in 2002. For more information, log on to www.hesston.org

Bluebird school buses up close. Glenview Illinois. May 2010.

I took this photo after work one day, back in May of 2010.

Two Bluebird school buses from local school bus operators Fairview Public Schools, and Wilmette Public Schools, are seen in the parking lot of a Safety Lane commercial vechicle inspection garage facility in north suburban Glenview Illinois.

First Transit 2008 Ford paratransit bus # 5157. Des Plaines Illinois. August 2010.

I am currently pursuing a career as a Paratransit driver.

Seen here is First Transit 2008 Ford paratransit bus # 5157, wich is the bus I am assigned to drive most of the time. It is a nice, modern and very good running bus. My passengers and I ride in comfort, and sometimes get a little spoiled by it. When this bus has to go to the mechanic's garage for occasional servicing and I am temporarilly assigned another vechicle....My passengers will often ask Me...
"Where is bus 5157 today Eddie?"

I enjoy being a Paratransit driver. It is a rewarding career for Me, as I have the opportunity to assist the elderly, handicapped and special needs people.

Thanks.

Hello everyone!
Once again, this is Eddie K Your host and photographer here at
Eddie's Railfan Page.

On Saturday, February 5th, 2011, I will be hosting another one of My
Chicago area railfan photo slideshows.

I will be appearing at the Chicago Public Library's Jefferson Park Branch,
located at 5363 West Lawrence Avenue in Chicago's Jefferson Park neighborhood
from 2:00 until 4:00 PM. Due to popular demand, I will be featuring My musical
photo slideshow I had put together entitled "When Chicago Rode The Streetcars".

If You, a family member or friend had grown up in the city of Chicago Illinois
prior to the end of CTA electric streetcar operations in 1958, then this video
will be sure to bring back many happy memories of Chicago the way it used to be.

This will be a fun event, and Your chance to escape the Chicago wintertime blahs.

Thanks.
Eddie K.

Strasburg Railroad: Plowing the Line

I spotted this video on You Tube today.

Way back in August of 1990, I had the distinct honor of seeing and riding
the Strasburg Railroad firsthand.

This video, shows the rarely seen Wintertime snowplowing operations on the
Strasburg Railroad, during what is normally considered the "Off Season" for
this tourist railroad located in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Southeastern Pennsylvania, apparently gets more than it's share of heavy
snow accumulation on any given Winter. Restored 1906 built Norfolk & Western
4-8-0 steam locomotive # 475, is viewed pushing a wooden Russell wedge plow
through a desert wasteland of bitter cold and snow.

I found this photo at My link page Fallen Flags.Org to the right of Your computer screen.

The Great Northern Railroad, had become another "Fallen Flag" railroad on March 2nd, 1970, when it had merged with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, the Northern Pacific, and the Spokane, Portland & Seatle railroads to create the Burlington Northern Railroad.

One od My all time favorite railroad color schemes from My childhood, was the Great Northern's "Big Sky Blue" color scheme that was introduced by the GN in 1967. It had replaced an orange and Pulman green color scheme, wich was the favorite diesel era GN color scheme favored by most railfans. Me? I loved the blue color scheme all along. This photo is listed as being photographed at Seatle Washington in May of 1969. The locomotive is an EMD model NW-2 yard switcher # 153.

For the first few years of the BN merger, Great Northern locomotives wearing both the orange and the later blue color schemes, could be seen heading up BN freight trains traveling in and out of Chicago Illinois

I took this photo during My recent September 2010 visit to Chicago's Brookfield Zoo.

Due to popular demand, I will once again be showing the musical photo slideshow I had put together entitled "When Chicago Rode The Streetcars". This musical photo slideshow video, is set to authentic historic period music ranging from Ragtime Piano, Dixieland Jazz, and 1940's era Big Band standards from the Glen Miller Orchestra, Artie Shaw, and Count Bassie to help set the mood for the show.

If You or perhaps a family member or friend grew up in the city of Chicago Illinois prior to the end of Chicago Transit Authority electric streetcar operations in 1958, then You will enjoy seeing these historic images of Chicago as it once was.

It will be a fun event, and e hope to see You there.

Thank You.

Some of the most unique color schemes I had seen on 1960's era EMD 2nd generation roadswitchers, were those utilized by the pre 1972 Illinois Central Gulf predecessor railroad Gulf, Mobile & Ohio.

Although this photo is only listed as saying April 1969, it shows the unique styling applied by the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio during the 1960's. Eventually, this was replaced by a brigt red and white G,M & O color scheme.

Several ex G,M & O locomotives in both the black and white and later red and white color schemes, headed up several Illinois Central Gulf trains in to the mid 1980's.
The ICG decided to reorganize around this time, and go back to utilizing the old Illinois Central name and use a new variation of their old black and white color scheme.

The Illinois Central became a fallen flag railroad in 1999, when it was purchased and acquired through merger by the Canadian National.

Conrail Hi Cube box car in transit somewhere in Ohio.

This photo comes to Eddie's Railfan Page from good friend and fellow railfan Dennis Madia.

Conrail existed as a railroad from 1976 until 1999. It was created from the U.S Goverment bail out of six bankrupt northeastern United States railroads. The railroads involved were...the Penn Central, Lehigh and Hudson River, Lehigh Valley, Reading, the Jersey Central, and the Erie Lackawanna.

After several years in operation, Conrail was acquired and split up through merger by the Norfolk Southern, and CSX Transportation Company.

Thank You for the photo Dennis.

I was on My way back to work after My lunch break last week, when I spotted this unique utility truck with Daffy Duck cartoon character icons on the rear.

I spent many a Saturday morning as a kid, watching the Buggs Bunny Roadrunner Show on television...and always enjoyed the occasional Daffy Duck cartoons that they would play.

The people at Lucas Concrete definately have a sense of humor.

The official Bluebird School Bus Company logo on the radiator grill. Glenview Illinois. Late May, 2010.

I was born in the city of Chicago Illinois during the year of 1962.

One of My happy childhood memories growing up in the city of Chicago back then, was actually seeing and riding the Chicago Transit Authority's electric powered trolley buses during their final years of operation on Chicago's city streets.

The Chicago Transit Authority, decided to begin phasing out the electric trolley buses during the late 1950's. The last CTA electric trolley buses that were purchased new, was an order for 300 from the Marmon Herrington Corporation in 1951.
The bus in this photo, was from that order.

I can now vaguelly recall during the late 1960's and early 70's...that sights like this one of a red CTA International Harvester wrecker truck towing a disabled electric trolley bus, were starting to become quiete common. I can actually recall seing this happen occasionaly on the CTA Route #53 Pulaski Road and the Route #52 Kedzie / California Avenue lines.

The Chicago Transit Authority phased out the remaining electric trolley bus lines out for good on Sunday, March 25th, 1973. The last two that operated on that day, are preserved and occasionally operated today at The Illinois Railway Museum in Union Illinois. www.irm.org
