I took this photo on West 51st Street at the Grand Trunk Western Railroad's Elsdon Yard on Chicago's southwest side.I visited the GTW Elsdon Yard facility in early October of 1983 upon hearing a rumor of the facility closing.
The rumors were unfortunately true. I made it out there just in time, to photograph this crossing gate operators tower in it's last week of operation at Elsdon Yard.
The GTW Elsdon Yard was a classic old 14 track steam era railroad yard located on West 51st street between South Lawndale Avenue to the west, and South St.Louis Avenue to the east. At certain periods of the night or day cycle, frequent switching moves took place here, requiring manual operation of the railroad crossing gates on West 51st Street.
