I took this photo looking west from the Grand Trunk Western Railroad Elsdon Yard on West 51st Street in Chicago. This beautifull Victorian era 2 story wooden train station, was built in 1888. I was visiting Elsdon Yard in early October of 1983, after hearing rumors amongst other railfans, that Elsdon Yard would be closing.
Seen here in it's last week of operation, is the former GTW Elsdon passenger station. By the time of this photograph, this large station building was used by Yard and freight train crews. The station building was demolished in November of 1983, and another era of old fashioned Chicago railroading would come to an end. If I had not visited the Elsdon Yard site on this day, I may have never had a photo of the Elsdon depot.
