A former Chicago, South Shore And South Bend Railroad caboose rusting away on a park display train. Hammond Indiana. Sunday, April 21st, 2013.

I took this photograph during a recent springtime group photo outing, to the far southeast side of Chicago and Hammond Indiana.

This is an example of "How not to preserve historic railroad rolling stock for display".

This retired caboose from the Chicago, South Shore And South Bend Railroad, is decaying on display in a city park across the street from the Hammond Indiana Civic Center.

No longer riding onboard freight trains being pulled by the big General Electric "Little Joe" electric freight service locomotives, this rusting and rotting example of American freight railroading, is now on display coupled on to a short display train being led by Nickle Plate Road 2-8-2 steam locomotive # 624,

This equipment is in such bad shape, that it would come as no surprise if eventually everything here was scrapped on site.

It would be nice if some sort of a railroad museum could acquire this collection and better preserve it against the elements.

Thanks.
Eddie K.
