Westbound Santa Fe intermodal train. Forest view Illinois USA. December 1990.

Seen here racing west near west 46th street and Harlem Avenue U.S Rt 43 in west suburban Forest View Illinois, is an Atchinson,Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad intermodal freight train. The engines were freshly painted into the "New" but yet very "Retro" Santa Fe red and silver color scheme that actually was used on the Santa Fe's pre 1971 passenger trains before Amtrak came along. These units will wear this color scheme for a number of years, however...The Burlington Northern Railroad and Santa Fe merged in 1995 and became BNSF. Some of the units remained red and silver after the merger, but had BNSF in large red letters on the side of the locomotive hoods until rebuilding and repainting into orange.
