Westbound Amtrak train passing through Brighton Junction. Chicago Illinois USA. January 1988.

Westbound Amtrak passing over the CSX / Conrail crosstracks at Brighton Junction. Chicago Illinois. January 1988.

I took this photo on a cold but dry winter afternoon way back in January of 1988.

We are looking north at the crosstracks at Brighton Junction. Brighton Junction is located on an embankment just west of the intersection of South Archer and Western Avenues on Chicago's near southwest side.

A westbound Amtrak regional passenger train has recieved clearance, and is now passing through the crosstracks. This old fashioned steam era crosstrack Chicago railroad junction, was still having it's train traffic controlled by an operator in a shanty using manual Semaphore signals back in 1988. The old junction was closed in early July of 2007, with the crosstracks and signals being replaced and modernized with satelite communications.

Notice the long gone Campbell Soup factory in the background, with it's unique soup can water tank on the roof.
