Preserved Southern Pacific Railroad 1951 vintage EMD model SD 7 heavy roadswitcher freight service locomotive # 1518. The Illinois Railway Museum. Union Illinois. Saturday, May 18th, 2013.

For fans of vintage diesel electric locomotive from America's past, there is nothng like the sight and sound of a mechanically working early 1950's era EMD heavy roadswitcher diesel electric locomotive used on freight trains. Southern Pacific # 1518 shown here, was built by the Electro Motive Corporation of General Motors (EMD) as a traveling demonstrator locomotive, promoting their "New" model SD 7 roadswitcher line of engines. Now retired, Southern Pacific # 1518 has made it in to preservation, and is occasionally operated on museum passenger trains and photo freights at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union Illinois. www.irm.org
