Indiana Harbor Belt coiled steel car in transit. Bridgeview Illinois USA. August 2007.

I took this photo after work in August of 2007. Seen here traveling southbound at the West 71st Street railroad crossing in Bridgeview Illinois, is an Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad coiled steel car. The car is in the IHB new image color scheme with large white letters. These cars are modified flatcars with removeable covers to protect the loads from the weather and the elements.

It's nice to see that the IHB now has some of their own rolling stock. In the past they had very little and the entire railroad was geared to accepting and delivering cars within the same 24 hours to avoid paying demurrage while they had almost no revenue coming in from this source.

I Myself have seen the Indiana Harbor Belt grow by leaps and bounds in recent years. I can still recall the old 1st generation EMD NW-2's in New York Central colors with jade green cabooses. Within the past 10 years or less, the IHB began using 6 axel EMD SD series roadswitchers, where as before, the transfer and road assignments were just handled only by the 1st generation EMD switchers. In 1980 the IHB experimented with a short lived orange and black "Pumpkin" color scheme. In 2005, a newer bright orange "pumpkin" color scheme was introduced and is doing quiete well. Many improvements today too.

Thank You.
Eddie.
