A large Canadian freighter ship traveling northbound through the Calumet River channel. Chicago Illinois. Sunday, November 25th, 2012.

I took this photograph last November, facing south / southeast fromthe East 95th Street drawbridge over the Calumet River, on the far southeast side of Chicago.

At 700 feet long, this large Canadian freighter ship requires tug boats at each end bow and stern, to navigate through the Calumet River channel near neighboring Hammond Indiana.

Ships used to travel through the Chicago River in downtown Chicago until 1972, and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal until sometime during the mid to late 1950's. The main reason this had stopped, was because the ships had outgrown the waterways, that were originally designed for smaller vessels.

Thanks.
Eddie K.
