The Oak Park Society of Model Engineers H.O Scale Model Railroad Club. Oak Park Illinois USA. Early August 2011., a photo by Eddie from Chicago on Flickr.
I took this photograph a few years ago, at the Oak Park Society of Model Engineers,H.O Scale Model Railroad Club in Oak Park Illinois.
Prior to 1971, before there was today's Amtrak...America's railroads had actually operated their own passenger trains. During the 1940's and 50's era, many of them actually promoted their passenger trains on the sides of box cars.
This example is from the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. The D,L & W during this time, was very proud of their famous "Phoebe Snow" named passenger train.
By the 1960's, many railroads would actually cease advertising their passenger trains in this manner, as many people began to travel via commercial airlines instead.
