I often speak about Chicago's electric streetcars when the subject of Chicago transit subjects come up here at Eddie's Railfan Page.

However....I was born too late to experience them growing up in Chicago first hand.
The last day of electric streetcar operation in Chicago, was June 21st, 1958. I was born in 1962, and missed the last streetcar by 4 years.

Growing up in Chicago during the 1960's and 70's like I did, I was there to actually see and ride the Chicago Transit Authority's electric trolley buses during their final years of operation.

This photo is from an internet site known as Tom's Trolley Bus Pictures.
A northbound CTA Route #52 Kedzie / California Avenue trolley bus, is viewed heading northbound on South Kedzie Avenue near West 44th Street in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood during the 1960's. I lived just west of the CTA Route #52 Kedzie / California Avenue trolleybus line, wich was converted to diesel and propane bus operation in March of 1969. This was because of the old two lane bridge over the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal at 33rd and Kedzie Avenue, was being condemmed and replaced with a stationary bridge.

The CTA converted several former streetcar lines to electric bus operation between 1947 and 1955. The last remaining CTA trolleybuses, were retired from service in March of 1973.

The last two that operated in Chicago in 1973, are preserved and occasionally operated today at The Illinois Railway Museum in Union Illinois.
