Penn Central General Electric E-44 electric freight locomotive in Baltimore Maryland. December 1978.

This photo comes to Eddie's Railfan Page from My links page Fallen Flags.Org to the right of Your computer screen.

Heavy duty elctric powered mainline railroading is very unique, and the northeastern United States had plenty of it to offer in both passenger and freight service prior to 1979. Today, it is all passenger service.

Prior to Conrail discontinuing electric freight train operations in 1979, some freight trains were hauled by huge General Electric model E-44 electric motors that were acquired second hand from the predecessor railroads New Haven, Pennsylvania and Penn Central.

Conrail was created by the United States goverment in April of 1976, to rescue six bankrupt northeastern united states railroads. This photo was taken in December of 1978, and shows a former Penn Central E-44 running light through the city of Baltimore Maryland.
