Chicago, South Shore And South Bend Railroad freight train alongside Torence Avenue. Hegwish Illinois. (Chicago) Sunday, April 21st, 2013.

I was having lunch at a local Burger King along the east side of Torence Avenue in Chicago's Hegwish neighborhood outpost community west of Hammond Indiana, when this photo opportunity was spotted outside the dining room window.

A four unit set of EMD GP 38-2 roadswitcher locomotives from the Chicago, South Shore And South Bend Railroad, are seen idling between switching movements.

A springtime sunset on West 95th Street. Evergreen Park Illinois. April 1990.

I took this photograph around sunset way back in April of 1990.

A springtime day with chilly temperatures and varying degrees of thick and thin overcast cloud cover, is coming to a close in south suburban Evergreen Park Illinois.

This photograph was taken facing west, from the intersection of West 95th Street and South Homan Avenue, in Evergreen Park Illinois.

Eddie K enjoying a pleasant evening bicycle ride. Chicago Illinois. May 1989.

Hi everyone!

Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page, from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.

This photograph was taken on the southside of Chicago, at approximately West 77th Street and South Kedzie Avenue in Chicago's Ashburn neighborhood, way back in May of 1989.

That "Skinny Guy" in the photograph was actually me. I didn't own a car at the time, and I was enjoying a lovely Springtime evening bicycle ride on the southwest side of Chicago.

Penn Central EMD GP 40 # 3016. Newark New Jersey. July 1975.

I found this historic mid 1970's era photograph from the former Penn Central Railroad at my link page Fallen Flags.Org, which is located to the right of your computer screen at www.rr-fallenflags.org Railfan photographer Karl Greffchen, photographed Penn Central EMD model GP 40 roadswitcher diesel electric locomotive # 3016, at a freight train yard in Newark New Jersey USA way back in July of 1975.

A 1960's era Santa Fe switching local being pulled by a Bachman Alco S 4 Yard Switcher.

This video was photographed at the Oak Park Society of Model Engineers,H.O Scale Model Railroad Club. My train shown here, represents a switching local from the former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, as one may have appeared during the mid 1960's. Notice the locomotive is wearing the 1950's era Santa Fe black and silver "Zebra Stripe" color scheme. The Santa Fe introduced a blue and yellow freight locomotive color scheme in 1960, but not all of the locomotives were repainted immediately during the 1960's.

Eastbound Burlington Northern freight train. Westmont Illinois. November 1989.

I took this photograph, way back in early November of 1989.

An eastbound Burlington Northern freight train, is viewed passing through the Westmont Illinois Metra commuter rail station.

Notice that there are locomotive crews in the lead and second trailing locomotive.

Lake Street Tower. Chicago Illinois. March 1983. (Gone)

I took this photograph one cold night, back in late March of 1983.

I had just recently purchased my first 35 mm camera, which was a Pentex M.E Super, and this was one of my first 35 mm night time railfan photographs.

Seen here along the Chicago River west of downtown Chicago at an area known as Wolf Point, is the Lake Street Tower. For many years, this interlocking tower had controlled passenger train traffic in and out of the north end of Chicago Union Station.

I found out recently, that this tower was demolished by Chicago's Metra commuter rail agency, in January of 2013.

Chicago, South Shore And South Bend Railroad freight train. Hegwish Illinois. (Chicago) Sunday, April 21st, 2013.

I took this photograph one week ago.

Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad EMD GP 38-2 roadswitcher # 2003, was leading a four unit set of locomotives. This locomotive crew, was performing a series of back and forth switching movements at Hegwish Illinois (Chicago), just west of neighboring Hammond Indiana on the far southeast side of Chicago Illinois.

Preserved Canadian Pacific 4-4-0 # 136 near Beeton. Sept 25th, 2011.

Here is a steam train video from Canada, "Eh"? Canadian Pacific Railway 4-4-0 steam locomotive # 136, was built in Glasgow Scotland during the 1880's, and served the Canadian Pacific Railway to the end of steam in the late 1950's. Today this locomotive pulls tourists on the South Simcoe Railway.

Morning sunshine on the potted rear porch plants.

Aside from my obvious photographic hobby interests in trains and various transportation subjects, I also enjoy taking those occasional flower and garden photographs.

This is an example of one of those photographs, taken on the back porch which faces east, in Elmwood Park Illinois one morning.

Metra heavy track maintenance work. Glenview Illinois. Monday, May 10th 2010.

I took this photograph after work one evening, back in May of 2010.

Chicago's Metra commuter rail system, was in the process of performing much track work in north suburban Glenview Illinois along the former Milwaukee Road northline, which today is owned by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, and now is refered to as the Metra / Milwaukee District northline.

Many ties and sections of track were replaced.

A then 20 year old Eddie K enjoying a vacation in the Wisconsin Dells. August 1982.

Hi everyone!

This is Eddie K, your host and photographer here at Eddie's Railfan Page.

Just recently...I found several of my old photographs that were basically put away in boxes for storage many years ago, and began to scan some of them for all to enjoy.

Here I am, a then 20 year old future host and photographer of Eddie's Railfan Page, enjoying an August 1982 family vacation in the Wisconsin Dells.

The locally popular "Ducks" ride, has been in operation here at the Wisconsin Dells as long as I can remember. I actually rode these a time or two during the late 1960's and early 1970's era on family vacations here.

These vehicles are retired and refurbished World War 2 United States Army Amphibious transport vehicles.

Thanks.

Chicago, South Shore And South Bend Railroad freight train. Hegwish Illinois. (Chicago) Sunday, April 21st, 2013.

I took this photograph last week Sunday in Hegwish Illinois, which is actually an outlying neighborhood on the far southeast side of Chicago, located just west of neighboring Hammond Indiana.

Seen here just west of Torence Avenue, is a four engine set of Chicago, South Shore And South Bend Railroad EMD GP 38-2 diesel electric roadswitcher locomotives, performing a series of switching movements.

Preserved Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad 1930 built Baldwin 4-6-4 steam locomotive # 3006. Galesburg Illinois. June 1998.

I took this photograph back in June of 1998, in the western Illinois city of Galesburg.

Proudly on display since the early 1960's after it's own retirement from service, is Baldwin 1930 built 4-6-4 Hudson type steam locomotive # 3006, from the former Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad.

This locomotive is a centerpiece of the Galesburg Railroad Museum, located on the east side of town. This locomotive pulled fast passenger trains through Galesburg and other midwest towns and citties during the steam era.

1970's era ICG switching local exits the tunnel.

This video was photographed at the Oak Park Society of Model Engineers,H.O Scale Model Railroad Club, which is located in Oak Park Illinois just west of Chicago.

The "Brand New" CTA O'Hare Airport terminal. Rosemont Illinois. March 1985.

I took this photograph way back in March of 1985.

The train of soon to be retired 1950's era Chicago Transit Authority 6000 and 550 series lightweight rapid transit cars built by the St. louis Car Company using scrapped streetcar components, was the chartered Illinois Railway Museum sponsored "Snowflake Special" CTA charter train.

This train is viewed in the recently opened CTA O'Hare Airport Terminal in northwest suburban Rosemeont Illinois.

Several of the CTA 6000's and 550 series rapid transit cars, found their way in to museum preservation after retirement from the CTA during the 1980's and 90's era. Some of these are preserved and operated today at the Illinois Railway Museum.

Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Alco RS 1 # 1122. Chicago Illinois. february 1st, 1970.

I found this historic photograph from the former Gulf, mobile & Ohio Railroad at my Link page Fallen Flags.Org, which is located to the right of your computer screen at www.rr-fallenflags.org The Gulf, Mobile & Ohio was a railroad that had served the southwest side of Chicago, the city of Joliet Illinois, and many online towns and citties from Chicago Illinois to Saint Louis Missouri for many years. The G,M & O was a railroad that was in a big hurry to modernize their locomotive fleet with diesel power during the 1940's, and retire steam locomotives for good. The American Locomotive Company or "Alco" as it is refered to, supplied the G,M & O with several early Alco roadswitcher locomotives like the model RS 1 shown here in Chicago at the begining of 1970. The G,M & O Alco switchers and roadswitchers, lasted in to the 1972 merger with the Illinois Central that created the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, and were eventually retired by 1975.

Indiana Harbor Belt # 518 in Dolton Illinois. June 2012.

The Fox River Trolley Museum. South Elgin Illinois. Early September 1990.

I took this photograph way back in early September of 1990.

This is a classic interior view photographed inside preserved Chicago Transit Authority rapid transit car # 4451, which is operated at the Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin Illinois. This car operated on Chicago's elevated and subway rapid transit lines from the mid 1920's until 1973.

Metra commuter train prepares to depart from Harvard Illinois. June 1996.

I took this photograph during a one day visit to the northern Illinois town of Harvard Illinois via Metra.

I had just disembarked from this Metra commuter train seen in the photograph at the end of the line in Harvard Illinois. The Metra uniformed conductor had just thrown the track switch, and now the train is slowly backing up. Soon the conductor will board, and the comuter train will be heading to the coach storage yard in Woodstock Illinois.

It would be at least 3 hours or so before the next Metra local enroute to Chicago will arrive in Harvard, so I made an afternoon of walking the main and side streets of Harvard on this beautiful sunny and hot summer day.

Thanks.

A mechanical music band organ. The Dutch Village. Holland Michigan. September 1986.

Hi everyone!

Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page, from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.

I took this photograph way back in September of 1986. We are at a popular local cultural family entertainment establishment in Holland Michigan known as "The Dutch Village".

An operating display on the grounds of the Dutch Village, is this unique mechanical "Band Organ", which plays the kind of music one would hear from a Merry Go Round ride at a carnival or amusement park.

These mechanical music machines with operating drums, cymbals, flutes and other instruments...operate on either a paper Piano Roll, or folding cardboard book with holes and slots to activate the various musical instruments.

This was life before the invention of the Jukebox.

Thanks.

Canadian National freight train on the interchange connection at Hawthorne Junction. Chicago / Cicero Illinois. March 2007.

I took this photograph after work one late afternoon, back in March of 2007.

We are facing south from the Hawthorne Junction crosstracks along the Chicago City Limits border at adjacent Cicero Illinois.

A Canadian National freight train is viewed leaving the Belt Railway of Chicago trackage on the interchange, and slowly heading to the nearby former Illinois Central Hawthorne Yard in Cicero Illinois.

The Grand Trunk Western Railroad's Elsdon roundhouse during the final week of operation. Chicago Illinois. October 1983. (Gone)

I took this now historic photograph, way back in October of 1983.

The Grand Trunk Western Railroad's 1914 built railroad roundhouse on South Kedzie Avenue at West 49th Street and the GTW Elsdon Yard facility itself, is now officially in it's final week of operation.

The GTW EMD locomotive in the foreground, is proboubly idling here for the last time at the roundhouse turntable tracks.

A steam crane lifting demonstration. The Illinois Railway Museum. Union Illinois. September 1982 Member's Weekend.

I took this photograph way back in September of 1982.

The Illinois Railway Museum located in the town of Union Illinois, was holding their annual Member's Day Weekend event, and the museum put on this unique steam crane lifting demonstration near the end of the day.

The museum's vinatge steam wrecking crane, is viewed lifting a recently acquired 0-4-0T fireless steam locomotive.

Chicago Short Line Railroad freight train. Hammond Indiana. Sunday, April 21st, 2013.

Santa Fe freight train crossing the Missisippi River lift bridge.

I photographed this digital live sound video last year, at the Oak Park Society of Model Engineers,H.O Scale Model Railroad Club. I have been a lifelong fan of the former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad myself, as this was one of many railroads I had grown up with in the windy city during the 1960's, 70's and 80's eras. Seen here is my 1960's era Santa Fe freight train being led by an Athearn model of a Santa Fe EMD GP 35, and a plain brown pre 1966 era Santa Fe steel cupola caboose on the rear.

The former Frosted Mug Drive In Restaurant. Alsip Illinois. Sunday, April 21st, 2013.

I took this photograph this past Sunday, in south suburban Alsip Illinois.

For many years, the old Frosted Mug Drive In Restaurant located at the northeast corner of West 116th Street and South pulaski Road in Alsip Illinois, was a favorite eatery and hangout of mine. With old car shows on Tuesday and Saturday nights, year round "Car Hop Service", as well as delicious and inexpensive food...this was a fun place to be.

The Frosted Mug closed in late 2007, and was sold. Some remodeling work has been done, and the place is believed to have changed owners a few times after the 2007 closure.

This is how the old place looks like today.

Thanks.

Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad 2-8-2 Mikado type steam locomotive # 260at a coaling dock. Chicago Illinois. 1949.

I found this photograph at my Link page Fallen Flags.Org, which is located to the right of your computer screen at www.rr-fallenflags.org

The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad which was once a subsidiary of the New York Central Railroad, provided dependable and sometimes frequent freight train service between northwest suburban Schiller Park Illinois and Gary Indiana.

The IHB like many other American railroads, was in a big hurry to dieselize their locomotive roster after World War 2 had ended, retire and scrap their remaining steam locomotives for good. This task was completed by 1952.

Seen here during that smokey period of railroading known as "The Steam Era", an Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad Alco 2-8-2 Mikado steam locomotive, is viewed taking on a fresh load of coal at an unknown locomotive terminal location somewhere perhaps on the southside of Chicago in 1949..

The Classics IV. "Stormy". 1968.

Hello everyone! This is Eddie K, your host and photograher here at Eddie's Railfan Page. From time to time, I occasionally mention the fact that "Happy Memories" are a key element behind the creativity here at my blogsite, which also helps attract many of those also important "Non Railfans" aboard for the fun here as well. One of my happy memories from when I was growing up in Chicago during the 1960's and early 1970's era, was listening to a wonderful American southern rock and roll music group from Jacksonville Florida known as "The Classics IV". Here they are performing their big smash hit single from 1968 entitled "Stormy", which featured the late great Dennis Yost on lead vocals. Sadly, Dennis Yost passed away in 2008, but this classic hit song will live on.

Rented advertising truck used for the 2013 People's Choice political party election. (They won!) Elmwood Park Illinois. April 2013.

I took this photograph recently in Elmwood Park Illinois.

2013 was an election year for many of the greater Chicagoland area's suburban villages.

This rented Isuzu cabover advertising truck, helped the local People's Choice party win an election victory for Elmwood Park in 2013.

Congratuations to Angelo "Skip" Saviano.

Illinois Central Gulf.

Growing up on the near southwest side of Chicago during the 1960's and 70's era, I was always a big fan of the former Illinois Central Gulf Railroad.

Their orange and white color scheme which was introduced by the Illinois Central in 1967 that unfortunately didn't weather well, combined with the color schemes of pre 1972 predecessor railroad Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, made this a colorful and interesting railroad to see operating in Chicago during that era.

Thanks. Eddie K.

CSX Transportation Company maintenance truck working near the West 71st Street railroad crossing. (Gone) Bridgeview Illinois. July 2007.

I took this photograph back in July of 2007.

A maintenance of way heavy utility truck from the CSX Transportation Company railroad, is viewed parked near the West 71st Street / Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad crossing in southwest suburban Bridgeview Illinois.

This railroad crossing for many years was a local incinvenience, as the many long transfer freight trains passing through here would tie up the traffic for long periods of time. Many local pedestrians and motorist would seek detours.

Within the past year of so, this crossing was taken out of service, and is now being reconstructed as an underpass viaduct to keep local traffic flowing on West 71st Street.

Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal EMD SW 9 # 9604. Chicago Illinois. March 26th, 1977.

Many railroads that serve or had served Chicago many years ago, helped to make the windy city the place it is for railfans like Myself and a few others out there to enjoy. I found this photograph at my link page Yesteryear Depot.Com, which is located to the right of your computer screen at www.yesteryeardepot.com Growing up on the near southwest side of Chicago during the 1960's and 70's myself, I can fondly recall seeing the EMD diesel switcher locomotives from the B & O C T working on the southside of the city. There is no photographers name mentioned for any credit in this photograph. The blue and yellow B & O C T EMD SW 9 yard switcher # 9604, is viewed idling somewhere in Chicago, coupled to a unit painted in the 1972 succesor railroad colors and markings of the Chessie System, which has since became today's CSX Transportation Company.

Hindsdale Illinois. November 1989.

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad switching local crosses a tall steel trestle.

I took this photograph recently, at the Oak Park Society of Model Engineers,H.O Scale Model Railroad Club.

My Bachman Alco S 4 switcher wearing the 1950's era Santa Fe zebra stripe color scheme, is viewed coupled to a cut of freight cars featuring an Athearn model of a circa 1966 rebuilt steel cupola caboose from the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe on a switching local way freight.

The A,T & S,F did not get around to painting every single locomotive wearing the 1950's zebra color scheme in to the blue and yellow 1960 color scheme immediately. This train represents how they may have looked like in daily service until nearly the end of the 1960's. Especially with the bright vermillion red caboose representing one of the rebuilt Santa Fe cabooses from the railroad's Cleburne Texas railroad shops begining in 1966, and introducing this then "New" caboose color scheme.
