Southbound CSX Transportation Company intermodal transfer train arriving at Brighton Junction. ( Gone.) Chicago Illinois. October 2006., a photo by Eddie from Chicago on Flickr.
I took this photograph on a very overcast autum morning back in October of 2006.
We are facing north at Chicago's Brighton Junction, located just northwest of the intersection of South Archer and Wesern Avenues on an elevated embankment.
Time is running out for the ancient steam era manual railroad junction, as new signal cabinets are already in place, as well as new block target signals on the east and west Canadian National ex Illinois Central mainline.
A southbound CSX Transportation Company intermodal transfer train, is viewed approaching and stopping at the crosstracks as required back then.
In July of 2007, the Canadian National officially closed this manual railroad junction, replaced the crosstracks and signals, and now this junction is 100 percent remotely controlled from a dispatch center somewhere else.
The old semaphore signals and operator's wooden shanty were set aside for preservation.
