The demolition of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad Elsdon roundhouse. Chicago Illinois. January 1988.

I was looking through some old boxes of 35 mm photographs that I had taken during the 1980's, and actually wound up finding several that I had forgotten I had even taken back then. Wow!

I took this lost and now very historic photograph, way back in January of 1988.

Time has run out for the 1914 built Grand Trunk Western Railroad's Elsdon roundhouse, which was located along the west side of South Kedzie Avenue at approximately West 49th Street in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood.

Abandoned since the GTW closed Elsdon Yard in October of 1983, the early stages of demolition are taking shape with the arrival of this wrecking ball equipped crane on the property.

A new outdoor retail strip mall will replace the old steam era roundhouse in 1989.

This was my final look at the GTW Elsdon roundhouse in Chicago. An era has ended for good.

Thanks.
Eddie K.
