Construction of the CTA orange line rapid transit to Midway Airport.Chicago Illinois. Early March 1989.

I took this now historic photograph from the southwest side of Chicago, way back in early March of 1989.

We are facing east alongside South Pulaski Road at approximately West 51st Street, at the borders of Chicago's Archer Heights and Elsdon neighborhoods near Midway Airport.

After many years in service and much deferred maintenance, the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad abandoned their Stockyards branch in December of 1988, and sold the right of way to the Chicago Transit Authority.

Here is a demolition contracting crew, removing the former IHB Stockyards branch rails, in preparation for the "New" CTA orange line rapid transit to Midway Airport during a mild weather spell late in the winter season.
