The merger that never materialized. Transitional color schemes at the Santa Fe Corwith Yard. Chicago Illinois USA. April 1987.
I took this photo looking east on South Archer Avenue toward the intersection at West 47th Street, way back in April of 1987.
The Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe and the Southern Pacific railroads were planning on having a huge merger between them. Heck! They both even went so far as to paint equipment in this experimenental "Kodachrome" red and yellow color scheme before even getting approval from the Interstate Commerce Commision to do so.
The verdict....The ICC said "NO". Although the merger did not go through as planned, the A,T & S,F and SP locomotives rolled around in this color scheme for several years after the fact. The SP was eventually purchased and merged in to the Union Pacific, and the Burlington Northern and santa Fe would also merge in 1995, becoming todays BNSF Railway.
