Amtrak 1970's era EMD F-40 PH locomotive converted to a baggage car with a control cab. Glenview Illinois USA. Febuary 2008.

I took this photo at the Glenview Illinois Amtrak / Metra commuter rail station. This is a side detail view of a late 1970's era Amtrak EMD model F-40 PH passenger diesel locmotive, that was converted in recent years into a non powered Baggage car with the cab retained for train control much like the Metra Bi Leval commuter cab coaches. When the Amtrak EMD F-40 PH locomotives were getting up in age mechanically and operating past their service lives, the officials at Amtrak found it economically cost effective to rebuild these old locomotives into Baggage / Cab Control Cars. The Diesel Prime Mover engine blocks were removed and a rolling side baggage door cut into the car body. The cab, headlights, bell, strobe lights, horns, and controls were retained, and recieve their power from electrical lines that pass through the passenger cars from the locomotive operating on the other end of the train. This is a great time saver at terminals, as the baggage cab control car guides the train on the return trip.
