Public safety sign courtesy of the Belt Railway of Chicago. Chicago Illinois USA. August 2007.

I took this photo looking west from the railroad crossing on South Austin Avenue and West 60th Street, near Chicago Midway Airport. Public safety is a constant and very important thing for anybody living along a busy railroad line. This line sees numerous transfer trains coming and going from Clearing Yard at any given time.

When we were kids growing up on the south west side of Chicago, our parents taught us not to play around on railroad tracks.

Signs were unnecessary. :-)

There used to be an even more dangerous line in Chicago's western suburbs, The Chicago, Aurora & Elgin wich was primarilly operated from an exposed third rail like on the CTA Rapid Transit. I heard that supposidly, the C,A & E officials would come out to local schools along the line, and give safety lectures to children to keep away from the third rail. The C,A & E quit the passenger business in 1957, and freight in 1959. Today the right of way is the Illinois Prarie Path bicycle trail.
Electric lines like this today would be fenced off. The C,A & E third rails were dangerously close to sidewalks by todays standards.

Thank You.
