Fairyland Amusement Park. 1938 -1978. Lyons Illinois USA.

I found this "Rare" photograph from the long gone Fairyland Amusement Park in Lyons Illinois on the internet yesterday.

Fairyland Amusement Park, was a small seasonal family owned and operated amusement park, that was located along the west side of South Harlem Avenue at West 40th Street, in west suburban Lyons Illinois. This amusement park existed from 1938 until 1978.

I visited Fairyland a small handful of times with My family during the early 1970's, but unfortunately...they did not bring the camera with them. "Dang!"

Fairyland Amusement Park, was a tiny little amusement park not much larger than a visiting carnival in a parking lot, but was quiete landscaped and scenic nonetheless.
Seen here in the photo, is the park's popular "Whoopie Coaster" ride. Fairyland featured portable carnival style rides, and also had some of the smaller kiddie rides like the Merry Go Round, The Helicopters, and a kiddie carousel featuring cars and motorcycles housed in an open sided wooden building. This was great, as these rides could still operate if the weather had turned rainy outside. Fairyland also had a gasoline powered streamlined passenger train just like the one at the nearby Kiddieland Amusement Park in Melrose Park Illinois.

After fairyland was sold and had closed for good in 1978, the park was quickly demolished, and the site was redeveloped in to a small retail strip mall, wich it is today.

Fairyland Amusement Park was a fun place to visit for 40 years in west suburban Lyons Illinois.

Thanks.

I have fond memories of Fairy Land from the mid-1960's. Vague memories of a .22 shooting gallery and "hand-operated" cars that ran on a course around the park. Maybe someone else can verify this.

Yes, I too fondly remember the hand cars, you sat on a little car and turned a wheel with a handle on each side that propelled the car you were on around a track like you wee your own personal train.
When there often as a little boy cause I lived a mile away on 46th and Wisconsin Ave. in Forest View
