Switching activity at the former Illinois Central Railroad, Crawford Yard. Chicago Illinois. June 2007.

One place I used to love to visit after work for some southside Chicago railfan activity, was the Canadian National Railroad's former Illinois Central R R Crawford Yard.

This little steam era freight train yard, was originally used by the former Illinois Central subsidiary railroad Chicago & Illinois Western, and was located alongside West 33rd Street between South Pulaski Road and South Kostner Avenue at the Chicago city limits, just east of the border at neighboring Cicero Illinois.

In this photograph, two EMD roadswitcher diesel electric locomotives acquired through merger in 1999 from the former Grand Trunk Western R R (Right) and the Illinois Central to the left, are spotting tank cars at Crawford Yard with the Commonwealth Edison Company's coal burning Crawford Generating Station power plant in the background.

The Canadian National closed Crawford Yard in 2011 and removed the tracks. The Commonwealth Edison Company Crawford Generating Station closed in 2012.

I am so glad that I took this photograph when I did back in June of 2007.

Thanks.
Eddie K.
