Hi everyone!
Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page from the city of Chicago Illinois.

Once in awhile, I occasionally get tired of eating the same regular food favorites all of the time. Coming from a city like Chicago Illinois, there are a lot of ethnic food favorites for those occasional changes of pace with lots of flavors to enjoy and experience.

One of My food favorites, is a Chinese entree known as Chicken Egg Foo Young. With that delicious brown gravy, seasoning and a side of rice, This helps to keep My taste buds interested.

Nothbound BNSF Railway light engine movement. Hawthorne Junction. Chicago / Cicero Illinois. February 2007.

I took this photo after work one evening, back in February of 2007.

Chicago was in a very serious deep freeze condition at the time of this photograph, with night time low temperatures below zero. Several underground water main pipes were actually bursting below the streets of Chicago.

With an outside temperature of a rapidly falling eight degrees above zero Farenheight and a sharp wind blowing out of the west...I went out to Hawthorne Junction to take this photo at sunset.

Seen here are two northbound BNSF Railway locomotives running light traveling over the Belt Railway of Chicago tracks at Hawthorne Junction. The locomotives are returning to the nearby BNSF Railway Clyde Yard in west suburban Cicero Illinois.

I froze taking this photo, but it was well worth it.

Entering the NorthWestern Station concourse building. (Gone.) Chicago Illinois. January 1984.

Hi everyone!
Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.

I took this now historic photo back in January of 1984.
Chicago's 1911 built NorthWestern Station on West Madison Street in downtown Chicago Illinois, was in it's last year of operation. The old building would be demolished during the upcomimg summer of 1984, to be replaced by a modern glass and steel skyscraper building that was originally named The Northwestern Atrium Center.

After the Union Pacific had acquired the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad through merger in 1995, the place would soon be renamed to the Richard B. Ogilvie Transportation Center in honor of the late Illinois Govoner.

This photo shows the the entrance to an enclosed pedestrian overpass bridge wich had spanned North Clinton Street, leading in to NorthWestern Station.

Hello everyone!

Welcome aboard the "Bus Day" edition of Eddie's Railfan Page.

In recent postings, I reported that I had been seriously injured in an early morning auto accident enroute to My job on Monday, November 15th, 2010. I sustained 4 fractured ribs and a small hole in My left lung. It has been a very painful experience for Me, and I am lucky to have survived the accident, after an eastbound motorist had failed to stop at a stop sign, and struck My driver's side door. My car was totaled!

I am here to report some good news today.
After being off of work for nearly a month, I am healing very nicely.
I am in less pain, and have largely stopped using My walking cane.
After a few Doctors appointments recently, it looks like I just may be returning to work next week.

I am looking foreward to resuming My career as a Paratransit Driver soon.

Thanks.

Team Work, is just what this photo describes in regards to early onboard operating practices by transit companies during the electric streetcar era.

Chicago began operating their first electric powered city streetcars in 1896. For the first several years in citties like Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, Boston and many other places in the nation, the two man standard of a Motorman and a Conductor, was the common system used by transit companies. Until the eventual and very economic "One Man" cars came along during the late Teens and early 1920's, the two man onboard crew was the thing.

Although the Chicago Surface Lines Company also owned one man cars, the standard two man team of an onboard Motorman and Conductor, continued on some lines after the Chicago Transit Authority purchased the CSL in 1947, and operated on some routes like this until Chicago's electric streetcar lines were all eventually phased out during the 1950's.

This photo shows the standard two man team of a motorman and conductor, at Chicago's Navy Pier CSL terminal taken during possibly the 1930's or 40's era.

New Haven Railroad heavy electric streamlined locomotive built in 1938. From the internet.

I have always been fascinated by electric railroad subjects.

The long gone New York, New Haven And Hartford Railroad in the eastern United States, was one railroad who had embraced steam, diesel and heavy electric motive power.

It must have been something to see and hear the shear power generated by these brutes, as they worked under heavy load conditions pulling long freight trains.

I took this photo after work around sunset, on a rainy evening back in October of 2006.

We are facing south on North Kilbourn Avenue. A westbound Chicago Transit Authority Green line train enroute to Oak Park Illinois, is viewed passing by over West Lake Street.

Chicago elevated tracks. 1936.

I spotted this old photograph on the internet recently.

We are facing west above Lake Street in downtown Chicago Illinois, during the year of 1936. It appears that an outbound electric interurban train from the now long gone Chicago, Aurora And Elgin Railroad, is entering on to the Lake Street elevated rapid transit trackage from the junction at Lake and Wells Street.

The Chicago, Aurora And Elgin Railroad, entered in to Chicago from west suburban Forest Park Illinois, over the Garfield Park elevated line of The Chicago Rapid Transit Company, and from 1947 until 1953 over the successor company, The Chicago Transit Authority.

The Chicago, Aurora And Elgin spent it's last few years or so in bankruptcy, after a handful of attempts to either purchase the railroad, or convert the passenger operation to motor bus operation had failed. The C,A & E quit the passenger business for good before the evening rush hour on Friday, July 3rd 1957, in a controversial move that left many passengers stranded that day. The C,A & E's freight operation continued until 1959.

The old Chicago, Aurora And Elgin mainline righyt of way, was converted to The Illinois Prairie Path bicycle trail during the 1970's.
Several former Chicago, Aurora And Elgin Railroad wooden and steel interurban passenger train cars, are preserved and operated today at The Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin Illinois, and at The Illinois Railway Museum in Union Illinois.

Seen here at an unknown location in Chicago's far north suburbs, is an electric interurban train from the now long gone Chicago, North Shore And Milwaukee Railroad. This railroad offered daily high speed passenger service between Chicago Illinois and Milwaukee Wisconsin, until the lines abandoonement due to bankruptcy in January of 1963.

The lead car, is painted inthe North Shore's modern "Silverliner" color scheme, wich was introduced in the year of 1950. The horizontal currogated looking stripes along the car sides, are actually painted on to look like modern streamliner staineless steel fluting.

Preserved examples of Chicago, North Shore And Milwaukee silverliner cars, can be seen today at The Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin Illinois, and The Illinois Railway Museum in Union Illinois.

This is a rare late 1960's era behind the scenes view of Chicago Transit Authority maintenance and support operations.

A practice that transit companies have done going back to the electric stretcar era, was the demotion and reassignment of older equipment to the company maintenance department. This photo wich was taken at the CTA Forest Glen Garage on North Elston Avenue and is dated for May 18th, 1969, shows a now demoted and repainted CTA 1950's era General Motors transit bus, serving in work bus service.

The CTA electric powered trolley bus lines, were operating in their final years of service. This diesel powered transit bus, has been equipped with special roof mounted trolley poles fitted with sleet scraper blades. These were used to scrape ice off the overhead trolley wires during the winter season.

The Chicago Transit Authority phased out the remaining electric powered trolley bus routes, on Sunday, March 25th, 1973. The last two CTA electric trolley buses that actually operated on the last day, are preserved and occasionally operated today at The Illinois Railway Museum in Union Illinois. www.irm.org

The GM bus that is seen here, proboubly operated in maintenance work bus service for perhaps another ten years or so for the Chicago Transit Authority before retirement.

This photo wich is dated for the year of 1927, shows a Chicago Motor Coach Company open double decker bus. Notice the solid metal and rubber wheels on the bus. Petticoat Junction intro

One of My favorite television shows I had grown up watching during the 1960's and 70's when I was a kid, was none other than Petticoat Junction.

The show aired on CBS from 1962 until 1970.

The locomotive used on the show was Sierra Railroad #3, a 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler type steam locomotive that wasbuilt by the Rogers Locomotive Works of Patterson New Jersey in the year of 1891. This locomotive was used for several western movies and TV shows, and was rebuilt recently.

The locomotive operates today at the Railtown 1897 tourist railroad in Jamestown California, wich is operated by the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento California.

The greater Chicagoland area, once had an abundance of electric powered interurban railroads. The Chicago, North Shore And Milwaukee Railroad wich had went out of business for good in January of 1963, was one of them.

A number of electric interurban railroads around the nation, also hauled freight trains over their systems.

This Chicago, North Shore And Milwaukee Railroad freight train, is viewed at work in the Kenosha Wisconsin area.
