The Grand Trunk Western Railroad Elsdon Yard locomotive terminal. (Gone.) Chicago Illinois USA. October 1983., a photo by Eddie from Chicago on Flickr.
I took this photo way back in October of 1983.
One of My all time favorite places to take train photos, was the Grand Trunk Western Railroad's Elsdon Yard on West 51st Street between South Central Park and South Lawndale Avenues.
I took this photo just west of the 1914 built Elsdon roundhouse, wich stood at approximately West 49th Street on South Kedzie Avenue. These locomotives are seen here idling on the ready tracks near the sanding tower.
Unfortunately...this photo was taken during the final week of operation at the very soon to be closed and abandoned Elsdon facility.
Several rumors I had recently heard through the railfan grapevine, helped Me to head out to Elsdon Yard to capture these images in the knick of time before it was too late.
The GTW Elsdon Yard locomotive facility and roundhouse, was eventually demolished in 1987. Today, this is the site of an outdoor retail strip mall.
